What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical drypoint print on cream paper. The very bottom edge crops the sterns of two or three moored barges; a tall, dark mast cuts diagonally across the entire composition, its taut rigging lines falling to either side. The canal water fills more than the lower half, rendered with loose, sketchy strokes, smudged ink and faint vertical reflections, showing the soft, velvety texture typical of drypoint burr. Across the water, a curved quay is lined with tall, leafless trees whose thin, wiry branches stand stark against the sky. Behind them rise tall building facades with rows of windows, drawn with nervous, broken lines. Tiny figures of passersby stroll the quay, and a few more boats are moored along the bank. The linework is gestural and quick, with dense accumulations of black and sepia ink contrasted with large areas of untouched paper that bring light. At lower right, the pencil signature reads Reindel imp.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tall mast that slices the image and guides your eye from the water in the foreground to the distant quay. Then look closely at the quivering lines of the bare trees and the tiny human silhouettes that give scale to the harbor.

ContextContexto

This is View in Rotterdam by American artist William George Reindel (1871–1948), dated about 1923, executed in drypoint and held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Gift of Edward B. Greene. No detailed source description is provided, but the title and date point to the artist’s European travel in the 1920s. Rotterdam was at the time a major fluvial and maritime port in the Netherlands. The print depicts an urban canal with barges and harbor architecture, a common subject for printmakers of the early 20th century. The artist probably sketched directly on site.

Curious detailDato curioso

Drypoint does not use acid: the artist scratches directly into the metal plate with a needle, raising a burr that holds ink and creates the soft, velvety dark line visible in the mast and hulls.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does your sense of the water change when you notice how empty it is compared to the densely lined quay?¿Cómo cambia tu sensación del agua al notar que está casi vacía de trazos en comparación con la orilla cargada de líneas?
  2. What feeling do the bare trees add between the boats and the buildings?¿Qué te hace sentir la presencia de los árboles pelados entre los barcos y los edificios?
  3. If you could hear this image, what harbor sounds would you imagine from the artist’s elevated viewpoint?

I focus on how this drypoint print on cream paper was made. The needle raised a burr and that creates the velvety texture of the black and sepia ink you see in the water and on the mast. Notice the white areas the artist left uninked to bring light and how the loose, nervous lines build the buildings and the branches. Even the pencil signature at the lower right tells us about his hands-on, direct process.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

That tall, dark mast crossing diagonally reminds me of a meridian drawn across the sky, with taut ropes like orbits falling to each side. The canal water fills more than the lower half and its barely hinted vertical reflections are like star glimmers on a dark surface. In the background, the leafless trees with twisted branches look like woody constellations cut against the pale sky, while the buildings with rows of windows mark an urban horizon.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It feels like I am peeking over the edge of the water and I see the little backs of two or three barges cut off at the bottom, as if they did not fit in the photo! A giant pole crosses the whole drawing diagonally and ropes hang from it. The water is made with little lines and smudges and looks super fluffy. On the other side there are bare little trees with wiggly branches and tall houses with lots of tiny windows. And there are super tiny people walking on the curved dock, you can barely see them!

  1. #1

If you look from bottom to top, what tall dark object crosses the whole image diagonally like a giant stick?

    HintPista

It rises among the barges cut off by the lower edge and has taut ropes on its sides.

  2. #2

In the very foreground at the bottom, how many barge sterns appear cut off by the edge?

    HintPista

They are the dark shapes peeking out right where the paper ends and where the mast rises.

  3. #3

The canal water fills more than the lower half. What near-black color is the ink that gives it its velvety texture?

    HintPista

It is the darkest color in the record, almost black, alongside sepia tones and the cream of the paper.
