silk embroidery on linen
What you would seeLo que verías
A tall, narrow textile of natural ivory linen, displayed against a soft gray background. The weave appears open and slightly translucent, with gentle ripples along the edges and faint brownish age stains in the upper section where the embroidery is most faded. The embroidered field fills almost the entire surface in horizontal bands: rows of capital letters and numerals in cross-stitch, worked in muted silk threads — pale blue, ochre yellow, sage green, dusty pink and light brown. Two small yellow crowns stand out, along with a green laurel wreath on the upper left. Near the center, a small rectangular vignette contains stylized flowers in blue, cream and dark green, like a tiny walled garden. Above it, numerals 9 to 11 and a partial alphabet are visible. Toward the bottom, ornamental border bands grow denser, with interlaced scrollwork, repeating crown motifs and geometric rows of dots and diamonds. The lowest edge shows a fringe of loose threads and four tiny pink stitches. The overall scale is intimate and domestic, the matte texture of linen contrasting with the faint sheen of silk, and the hand-stitched irregularities give the piece a humble, human presence.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the top where the bare, stained linen shows age and fading, then move slowly downward through the rows of letters and numbers to follow the stitched handwriting. Pause at the small central flower panel and the yellow crowns, noticing how these decorative interruptions give character to an otherwise repetitive study.
ContextContexto
This is a sampler dated 1742, attributed to German culture of the mid-18th century, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The technique is silk embroidery on linen and the maker is unknown, which is typical for such works. Samplers were textile exercises usually made by young girls to demonstrate mastery of stitches, alphabets, numbers and decorative motifs, serving both as a skill record and a reference tool. The work belongs to the Textiles department and was acquired through the Educational Purchase Fund. The source provides no further description and no information is available about the specific maker or exact place of creation.

Curious detailDato curioso
Such 18th-century Central European samplers often included crowns, wreaths and floral panels as traditional motifs of accomplishment, and incomplete alphabets were common because the goal was practicing stitches rather than linguistic correctness.

I pause at what time has left on the linen: that raw ivory, open and translucent weave, with brownish stains at the top where the silk has faded. I see the soft sheen of silk against the matte linen, threads in pale blue, ochre, sage green and soft pink. The frayed lower edge and the gentle ripples worry me as a conservator. Each cross stitch is a preserved lesson, an alphabet and numbers that have survived almost three centuries.

When I look at this 1742 sampler I think of constellations. The bands of letters and numbers from 9 to 11 are like maps to find your way, just as we align stars. The two yellow crowns at the top shine like small suns, and the small floral panel in the center reminds me of a cluster seen through a magnifier. The geometric borders below are repeated orbits, a rhythm that orders chaos, a domestic universe embroidered in silk on linen.

This looks like my school homework but on fabric! I see big letters and numbers from 9 to 11, although the alphabet is not complete. There are two yellow crowns that look like for a princess and a little green wreath. In the middle there are tiny blue and green flowers, a little garden. At the bottom there are lots of repeated little drawings and four pink dots. It looks old and has frayed tassels, but I like it because I also practice my letters.
