What you would seeLo que verías

The image is an elongated horizontal engraving in frieze format, with stark black-and-white contrast against a very dark, almost black background. The scene fills the rectangle edge to edge, like a compressed classical relief. At center-right, a young man with bare torso and leafy wreath sits on a two-wheeled chariot pulled by two caparisoned horses galloping to the left; beside him a satyr holds up an enormous bunch of grapes. The chariot is laden with jars, amphorae and vine garlands. In front of the horses, a plump putto rides one of the steeds while holding aloft a bearded head and a vine branch. To the left, a dense crowd of nude and semi-nude male figures, satyrs with pointed ears and men in animal skins, presses together in twisted poses: some carry trays of meat and fruit on their heads, others blow curved horns, one is pulled by the hair as he falls to his knees. To the right, draped women with vessels push the chariot and offer food. The linework is extremely fine, with cross-hatching creating volume in muscles, wavy manes and drapery folds. Along the bottom edge a Latin inscription and the number 15 are visible. The light is flat and frontal, as if a relief were lit on stage, with no natural shadows. The texture suggests old paper with dense black ink and miniaturist detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the frieze from left to right as if it were a moving procession. Pause at the central chariot and then return to the edges to notice how each figure carries a different object — trays, grapes, jars, heads — turning triumph into a festive and slightly chaotic accumulation.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to the series of twelve engravings known as Combats and Triumphs by Étienne Delaune (French, 1518/19 - c. 1583), probably made in the 1560s and dated c. 1550-1572. According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the set as a Gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr., this sheet is The Triumph of Bacchus. The frieze-like composition reflects the artist's study of Greek and Roman sarcophagus reliefs, reworked in a Mannerist idiom with ballet-like, theatrical figures. Delaune was inspired by art at Fontainebleau but worked in Paris and later Strasbourg in the late 1500s; his training as a goldsmith and medallist explains the exquisitely small and precise execution, marked CVM PRIVILEGIO REGIS at the bottom.

Curious detailDato curioso

Delaune was celebrated for the surprisingly tiny scale of his engravings: although they mimic large ancient marble friezes, many of his prints fit in the palm of a hand and must be viewed up close to appreciate the goldsmith's burin work.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I am struck by how tiny and precise this print is. I look at the black-and-white frieze on an almost black ground and see Delaune's goldsmith hand: very fine lines and cross-hatching that shape muscles, waving manes and drapery folds. The cart loaded with jugs and amphorae, the vine garlands and the old paper with dense black ink speak to me of a precious, controlled execution, made to be read like a classical relief lit from the front.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look for skies and here there is no starry night but an even, artificial light, like a relief lit straight on with no natural shadows. That absence helps me read the frieze from edge to edge: the two-wheeled cart pulled by two horses toward the left, the young man crowned with vine leaves and the putto holding a bearded head aloft. Everything seems to turn in a continuous parade, a festive orbit where each figure keeps its place in the procession.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super crowded parade that never ends! I see fancy horses galloping and a cart full of jugs, with a bare-chested young man wearing a leafy crown and a satyr holding a huge bunch of grapes. Up front a chubby little kid rides a horse lifting a bearded head. Behind everyone pushes, carries trays of food on their heads, plays curvy horns and even pulls someone by the hair. It feels like a noisy, funny party.
