What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal print sits within a wide margin of cream-colored, slightly aged paper, with a faint vertical join visible at the center. In the foreground, a snow-covered path marked by small dark footprints leads to a large blue-gray torii marking the shrine entrance. A black plaque with white calligraphy hangs from its upper beam. On either side, stone lanterns and a low fence, also printed in blue, carry thick caps of accumulated snow. Four figures in kimono cross the scene. At left, two women walk close together beneath a dark umbrella with a pale rim; at center, another figure, seen from behind, holds a large light umbrella with black ribs and leans slightly, as if bracing against the weather. Their upswept hair, blue, pink, and orange garments, and hems lifted above the snow are carefully picked out. Behind them, snow-covered roofs, leafless trees, and, at far left, twisted pines with stark black-and-white trunks recede into the distance. The dark gray sky is flecked with uneven white dots falling gently. The light is diffuse, without hard shadows, and the surface mixes fine line, flat areas of color, and the grain of the paper. Columns of Japanese text appear at upper left, with the artist's signature and a red seal below.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the dark footprints in the snow toward the blue torii, then look for the umbrellas that guide your eye from one figure to the next. Notice how the gate, lanterns, and fence share the same cold blue. Finally, compare the twisted pines on the left with the still roofs in the background.

ContextContexto

This color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), made in the mid-1830s, belongs to the series *Famous Places in Kyoto* and represents snow at the Gion Shrine. It dates to Japan's Edo period (1615–1868), when landscape prints circulated widely as relatively affordable images. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the work is held, it entered the collection as a gift of Mrs. Francis F. Prentiss for the Dudley P. Allen Collection. The exact day or occasion of the visit shown is not known; it is probably a seasonal view rather than a record of a specific event.

Curious detailDato curioso

Much of the snow is not white ink at all: it is the pale paper left unprinted, a common and elegant economy of means in Japanese woodblock printing.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at how the paper holds the snow. The creamy margin around the print shows gentle aging and the faint vertical seam at the center, a trace of the printing process. I notice the bluish gray torii and the stone lanterns capped with white, the umbrellas with black ribs and the kimonos in blue, pink and orange standing out against the gray. The speckled sky and the dark footprints on the path reveal the balance between flat color, fine lines and the grain of the paper.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It is not a starry night, but this dark gray sky makes me think of winter watching. The white dots falling like snow look like a soft shower of particles, without shine, under diffuse light and no harsh shadows. The torii works like a frame, as if we were looking through a viewfinder toward the snow covered roofs and the twisted pines in the distance. The figures with umbrellas move calmly, mindful of the weather, under a sky that covers everything evenly.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like it is snowing very quietly. I like the white path with little black footprints and the big blue gate everyone wants to walk through. Two ladies share one umbrella and another one carries a very big light one, like a little walking house. The trees have no leaves and have snow on their heads, just like the little stone lanterns. Everything looks soft and cold, but the people wear pretty colorful kimonos so they do not get lost in the white.
