What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white woodcut, densely packed inside a thin rectangular frame. In the foreground, at lower center, a muscular, nearly naked man covered in rough animal skins leans his whole body into pushing a long farming tool with a wooden shaft and pointed metal tip into the earth. His bare feet brace against stony ground, his hands grip the handle, and his bearded face in profile shows strain. Pressed close behind him, a grinning skeleton helps him push: one bony hand touches his shoulder while the other holds the tool. To the left, in the middle ground, a long-haired woman also wearing skins breastfeeds a baby and holds a tall distaff with wool. Her expression is weary rather than idealized. On the right looms a huge, twisted, nearly leafless tree, its gnarled branches and roots invading the space like claws. Behind the figures are hills shaded with parallel lines, a narrow sky with horizontal clouds, and small birds. At the lower left, almost hidden, stands an hourglass. Fine hatching in black ink creates the textures: tense muscles, bark, fur, dry soil, and smooth bone. The image is small in scale, yet cramped, claustrophobic, and full of diagonal movement.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with Adam's straining hands and feet, then notice who is helping him push. Look to the left for Eve and the baby, and finally find the small hourglass at the bottom: it quietly turns a farming scene into a reminder of time running out.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is *The Dance of Death: Adam Tilling the Earth*, a woodcut from around 1526 by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543), a German artist active in England and Switzerland, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Dance of Death was a widely known theme in late medieval and early modern Europe: Death visits people of every rank and occupation. Here the reference is probably to Genesis, where after leaving Eden Adam must work the earth and Eve bears children in hardship. It is not known from the source data for which exact edition or printing this impression was made.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: Death is not dragging Adam away, but working beside him like a fellow laborer, with one bony hand on the tool.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the scene change when Death appears as a coworker instead of an attacker?¿Cómo cambia la escena cuando la Muerte aparece como compañera de trabajo y no como atacante?
  2. What does the contrast between the newborn baby and the skeleton say about the cycle of life?¿Qué dice el contraste entre el bebé recién nacido y el esqueleto sobre el ciclo de la vida?
  3. Why might the tree and the barren land be shown as almost as important as the human figures?¿Por qué el árbol y la tierra árida podrían mostrarse casi tan importantes como las figuras humanas?

I pause on how the black ink works on the light paper to create everything with lines. Look at the very fine hatching that shapes Adam’s tense muscles, the gnarled bark of the huge twisted tree and the rough skins he and the woman wear. The skeleton, smooth and bright by contrast, sticks to his back and also pushes the long farming tool. I notice that stony ground and the tall distaff she holds while nursing her baby, everything cramped inside the thin rectangular frame, as if wear itself were part of the material.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What grips me most is how this vertical print organizes space like a small cosmos. At the bottom center is human effort, with Adam pushing and Death clinging to his back, and on the left the woman with the baby and the distaff. Above, the huge almost leafless tree spreads its branches as if trying to touch the brief sky with horizontal clouds and tiny birds. In the back the hills hatched with parallel lines and the narrow horizon remind us that time here is limited, as hinted by that hourglass almost hidden below on the left.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The man is working super hard and there is a funny but a bit spooky skeleton stuck to him helping push the long wooden tool into the dirt! He looks tired with bare feet on the stones. On the side there is a lady with her baby drinking milk and she holds a tall stick with wool. The tree next to them looks like claws and has almost no leaves. I like searching for the tiny little birds in the sky and the hidden hourglass down below on the left, like a find-the-object game.

  1. #1

If you look down on the left, almost hidden on the stony ground, what small time-measuring object can you find?

    HintPista

It is made of glass, with sand falling from one side to the other, and reminds us that time passes.

  2. #2

On the left, behind Adam and the skeleton, what is the long-haired woman doing while holding a tall distaff?

    HintPista

Look at what she carries in her arms, very close to her chest, while her expression looks tired.

  3. #3

What tree dominates the right side of the scene, with knotty branches and roots like claws and almost no leaves?

    HintPista

It is huge, takes up a lot of vertical space and its bark is made with many crossed lines.
