A vertical charcoal drawing on tan-brown paper with a visibly grainy surface. At center, in the foreground and large in scale, is the bust of a woman seen in three-quarter view facing left, her head bowed and her gaze lowered. Her face occupies the upper half of the sheet; her forehead is broad and bright, her straight nose casts a slight shadow, and her barely parted lips are set down with darker strokes. Her eyes look down and to one side, away from the viewer, with eyelids and lashes suggested by short marks and small hollows beneath them. Her dark hair is smoothed back from a center part and gathered into a low bun behind her visible ear, with wavy strands drawn as parallel curved lines. She wears a light garment with a simple round neckline; her shoulders and chest are only lightly shaded and fade into the unworked paper toward the bottom edge. The background is a dark gray-black mass of vertical, rubbed strokes. A thin pale halo separates the head from that ground, making the profile stand out. The texture is rough and smoky, with smudges and uneven blacks. In the lower right corner appears a handwritten signature, 'LBM', and at lower left there are faint, nearly illegible marks.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the downcast gaze and notice that she never meets the viewer. Then follow the pale halo around her hair toward the dark background, and finally look at how the shoulders dissolve into the paper instead of ending in a firm outline.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Elena, a charcoal drawing by American artist Louise B. Maloney (1887–1973), dated circa 1910–25 and associated with Cleveland, Ohio. It belongs to the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. The source description is empty, so it is not known who Elena was, whether that was the sitter's real name, or under what circumstances the portrait was made. Charcoal was — and still is — a common medium for portrait studies because it allows broad shadows, quick corrections, and very soft transitions on toned paper, as seen here.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the brightest light on the face is not white paint, but the tan color of the paper itself, left almost untouched and made to glow by the dark charcoal around it.

  1. What might Elena be thinking or feeling at the moment the portrait captures her?¿Qué podría estar pensando o sintiendo Elena en el instante que captura el retrato?
  2. How does the reading of the portrait change because her clothing and surroundings are barely described?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de la obra porque su ropa y su entorno apenas están descritos?
  3. What does the drawing gain by leaving areas of bare paper instead of finishing every detail?¿Qué gana el dibujo al dejar zonas de papel desnudo en vez de terminar todos los detalles?

I focus on the charcoal on that brownish beige paper with its visible grain. I see how the artist rubbed vertical strokes to build that dark grayish-black background and left a pale halo around the head to separate it. The luminous forehead contrasts with the dark hair drawn with parallel curved lines toward the low bun. At the lower right I can make out the signature «LBM» and on the left some faint almost illegible marks. I am interested in how the shading fades toward the chest without reaching the edge.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this portrait as a study of light. The face fills the upper half and seems lit from above, with the broad luminous forehead and the straight nose casting a soft shadow. The eyes look downward without meeting the viewer. It reminds me of watching a waning moon: the dark rubbed background makes the profile stand out like a night sky, and that thin pale halo around the head works like a glow that cuts the figure out against the darkness of the paper.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Mrs Elena is very close, as if she were giant on the page. She has dark hair pulled back in a bun and a light round-neck blouse. She is not looking at me, she looks down as if she is thinking or a little sad. Her mouth is slightly open. Behind her everything is painted dark gray and around her head there is like a little light that makes her glow. At the bottom it says «LBM», which must be the initials of the person who drew her.
