What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in dark ink on cream-colored paper, seen from a strikingly high viewpoint. The right half is occupied by a massive stone river wall, built from large blocks with deep vertical grooves, buttresses, and dark cracks drawn with dense parallel hatching. Its upper edge angles down from the upper right, while a steep cobblestone ramp in the lower center plunges toward the water, making the whole scene feel precipitous. On a narrow ledge, a few tiny figures stand out: one seems to be fishing, others walk or crouch near the shore. To the left stretches the pale, mostly empty river, animated by sailboats. In the middle distance, one boat carries several passengers, another has striped sails, and a smaller one floats alone. At the bottom, two empty boats are cut off by the frame, seen from above, their ribs and pointed prows sharply detailed. In the far background are more masts, rooftops, and miniature figures along a quay. The light is bright and even, with no sky visible; texture comes entirely from fine, sketchy lines. Below the image, handwritten, are the title and the artist's signature, with the number 11/40 at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, following the wall's diagonal lines downward until you reach the small figures on the ramp. Then move left, from boat to boat, toward the distant harbor. Notice how this high, cropped view leaves out the great metal bridges and makes an old riverside city feel almost timeless.

ContextContexto

River Wall, Oporto, from about 1925, is an etching by American artist Orville Houghton Peets (1884-1968). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the work is held, Peets was commissioned beginning in 1920 by the Hispanic Society of America to travel to Portugal and make art from his experience. The scene shows residents of Porto going about their lives along the Douro River, beside the winding river wall. Oporto is the older English name for Porto. The museum notes that the framing deliberately excludes the massive metal arch bridges that had crossed the Douro since the 1880s. This impression is numbered 11/40.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the great metal arch bridges had crossed the Douro since the 1880s, none appears here: the artist cropped them out, removing the most modern landmark from a scene made around 1925.

What moves me is the technique of this etching on cream colored paper. The whole image is made only with dark ink and fine loose lines, with very dense parallel hatching that forms the black cracks of the wall. I notice how the artist achieved the texture of the large stone blocks, the buttresses and the cobbled ramp in the center. Below the image you can read the title and signature by hand, and in the lower right corner the number 11/40, which tells us it is a numbered print.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to the very high viewpoint, almost like looking from an invisible bridge that the museum says the artist deliberately avoided showing. The monumental wall fills the right half and its upper edge slopes diagonally, while the ramp plunges toward the water and creates a sense of vertigo. To the left the river looks pale and almost empty, enlivened only by sailboats with striped sails and small boats. It is a clear and even light, with no visible sky, that seems to suspend time over the Douro.

This picture gives me tingles because it feels like I am going to fall! The wall is gigantic and the ramp goes down super steeply to the water. If you look closely there are tiny little people on the narrow ledge, one seems to be fishing and others are walking. I like the two empty little boats at the bottom seen from above, with pointy bows and tiny lines for the wood. Far away there are more sailboats and rooftops. Everything is drawn only with little black lines on light paper.

Looking at the lower right corner below the image, what print number can you read handwritten?

    HintPista

Look for a small number written by hand on the cream paper, it is not part of the drawing.

  2. #2

At the bottom, cut off by the frame, how many empty boats are seen from above with hull details?

    HintPista

Look at the central bottom edge, right where the ramp ends.

  3. #3

What color is the paper on which the river wall scene is printed?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it is a warm pale tone that looks like old paper.
