What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is shown centered and head-on, floating against a graduated background that shifts from near-black gray at the top to pale gray below, with no base or setting visible. It is a vertical sculptural fragment, somewhat taller than it is wide, ending at the bottom in a flat, uneven surface that suggests an old break. The foreground is dominated by an elongated animal head seen from the front, carved in limestone with a rough, porous grain. Its surface mixes grayish beige and worn white with remains of reddish-brown pigment, most visible on the forehead, muzzle, and side locks. Across the top runs a crest of short hair, rendered with parallel, wavy incisions tinted red. On both sides of the jaw, long striated locks fall like a divided beard. Low on the face, the muzzle is rounded, with a small, almost triangular nose and barely indicated nostrils. Only one eye is clearly preserved, on the viewer's right: round, bulging, and darker in tone, set inside a carved eyelid. The ears or horns are badly damaged; on the left there is a pale, rough stump. Chips, losses, and eroded edges throughout make the stone's age immediately visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the snout and the split beard, the clearest clues that this is a goat. Then move up to the single round eye and notice how much it unsettles the identification. Finally, look for the traces of red paint and the breaks where ears or horns may have been.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this Greek limestone sculpture by an unknown maker dates to about 500–475 BCE and preserves reddish-brown paint. It was first identified as a horse's head, but its beard indicates a goat. Its large size — no dimensions are given in the source data here — the position of the neck, and its unusual round eye all raise questions: it probably came from a rearing goat, or from Pan, the rustic shepherd god often shown as half man, half goat. It was once linked to a fifth-century BCE Athenian sanctuary, but scientific tests cast doubt on an alleged provenance near the Athenian Acropolis. Its exact origin is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

This goat was first mistaken for a horse: the beard, not the overall shape of the head, is what corrected the identification.

  1. Was this head part of an animal or of a god such as Pan, and what evidence could settle the question?¿Esta cabeza formaba parte de un animal o de un dios como Pan, y qué pruebas podrían resolverlo?
  2. How would the reddish-brown paint, when it was fresh, have changed the way the head was seen?¿Cómo cambiaba la pintura pardo rojiza, cuando estaba fresca, la manera de mirar esta cabeza?
  3. What does a fragment make us imagine about the lost whole, and what might we be inventing?¿Qué nos hace imaginar un fragmento sobre la obra completa perdida, y qué parte de eso estamos inventando?

Up close I see a porous limestone, grayish beige with worn whitish patches and traces of reddish brown pigment on the forehead, muzzle and hair tufts. That polychromy is fragile and tells a lot. The parallel incisions on the crest still hold color, and the beard split into two striated locks shows firm carving. I focus on the flat fracture at the base and the bulging dark eye that survives, signs of erosion, chips and a long material history.

I am drawn to the mystery of this head staring straight ahead as if watching from another time. At first it was thought to be a horse, but the beard reveals it as a goat, perhaps part of a rearing goat or of Pan the pastoral god. Its round bulging eye is unusual and seems to follow you. I wonder what larger group it broke off from and why its exact origin remains unknown, like a star whose provenance is still debated.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little goat with a long beard split in two! It has a round little muzzle with a tiny triangular nose and just one dark bulgy eye you can see clearly. On top it has little hairs with reddish painted stripes. It looks all rough and chipped, as if it fell a very long time ago. Its beard makes me giggle and I wonder if it was a naughty goat standing on two legs or part of a magical half goat man.

At first experts thought it was a different animal, but a hairy detail on the jaw revealed what it really is: what animal does this fragment represent?
