What you would seeLo que verías
Near the left center rises a tall, pale stone funerary monument with a square colonnaded base in Ionic style, a cylindrical drum and a conical roof ending in a narrow, bottle-like finial; dry shrubs and small patches of green cling to its cornices. It stands on an arid, rocky slope in warm ochre, beige and pale grey, with layered outcrops and scattered boulders. At its foot, on the sandy ground, two tiny seated figures —one in a reddish robe— are conversing, while closer to the foreground, on the edge of a gully, a group of five figures in colorful cloaks —blue, deep red, yellow and brown— rests among rocks, one holding a long staff. To the right, a single-arch stone bridge spans a dark, dry streambed. Beyond, a broad valley opens with soft hills, cave openings carved into the cliffs and sparse vegetation under a cloudy sky washed in diluted blues and greys, rendered with soft, watercolor-like tints. The whole image has the texture of a hand-colored lithograph, with fine linear detail and translucent washes that convey diffused light.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the vertical monument and move down to the tiny human figures that reveal its scale. Notice the contrast between the carved architecture and the rough natural cliff behind it. Then follow the gully and the small bridge into the distant valley to sense the monument's isolation in the landscape.
ContextContexto
This is a color lithograph by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), dated 1839, in the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts the so-called Pillar of Absalom, a rock-cut funerary monument in the Kidron Valley, traditionally called the Valley of Jehoshaphat, near Jerusalem. Roberts travelled through Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838–1839, and his on-site drawings were later worked up into lithographs for wide European distribution. The print reflects his direct observation combined with studio reworking and hand-coloring by the lithographic workshop; the exact coloring and printing details are not recorded in the source data.

Roberts’s Holy Land views were published as «The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia» (1842–1849), containing 247 lithographs after his sketches, one of the most lavish and influential travel publications of the Victorian era.

I focus on how this image was made, it is not a photo but a hand-colored lithograph from 1839. I see the very diluted watercolor wash in the sky, with greys and pale blues that let the paper breathe, and the fine line that defines the Ionic columns and the conical top. I am intrigued by the dry shrubs hanging from the cornices and the ochres of the slope, that palette of beige, pale grey and dry green that looks like it was applied in light layers in the lithographic workshop.

I look at the sky because I always search for light. Here it is cloudy, with very soft greys and pale blues and a diffuse light that creates no harsh shadows, like a hazy morning. Below, the Pillar of Absalom rises bright against the arid slope, with its square base, its cylindrical body and its bottle-shaped top, very vertical, almost like a landscape marker. The wide valley and the single-arch bridge help me measure distances and imagine the depth of this place.

That monument looks like a tall cake with a bottle on top! It stands alone on a cookie-colored mountain with loose stones and little dry plants hanging from it. Down below there are tiny people in colorful clothes, blue, red, yellow and brown, some sitting and chatting and one with a long stick like a cane. On the right there is a little stone bridge and behind a huge valley with little caves. The sky is cloudy and everything looks like it was painted with watercolors.
