What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white lithograph is centered on a wide margin of bone-white paper. In the upper right corner, “ODILON REDON” is printed in small letters; “Pl. III” appears at lower left. The lower right holds the bust of a young woman seen from the front, cropped at the chest. Her hair is pulled tightly back and falls in thin strands beside her face. Her eyes are dark and uneven, her mouth closed, her expression still and melancholic. A pale area across her shoulders suggests a light garment, with vertical strokes darkening the sleeve. To her left, slightly higher, descends a huge black bird-like creature that occupies much of the left side. One striated wing extends toward the left edge, while long, hair-like feathers trail downward. Within its dark head, two bright spots and a pale, triangular form create the impression of a mask or skull-like face. Thin curved lines rise like antennae. The background is made of dense lithographic grain and diagonal hatching, darkest at upper left and paler toward the right. The contrast is stark: the woman is modeled in gray, the creature is an almost solid, velvety black mass hovering just above her hair.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the woman's calm face, then follow the top of her head toward the black mass descending beside her. Only after a moment does the bird's pale, mask-like face emerge from the darkness. Notice how the threat is defined not by sharp detail, but by weight, shadow and proximity.
ContextContexto
This lithograph by Odilon Redon (1840–1916), dated 1888 and marked “Pl. III,” belongs to one of three portfolios he made in response to Gustave Flaubert's novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Redon was drawn to Flaubert's fantastic account of the moral trials of a desert hermit and sought to recreate the dense blackness of his charcoal drawings in lithography. Rather than illustrating specific passages, he invented monsters and figures in otherworldly settings, using abrupt contrasts of tone. The source credits Becquet and Edmond Deman alongside Redon, and notes that these prints were largely misunderstood in their own time.

Curious detailDato curioso
Look closely: the bird is not first read as a bird. Its face appears only gradually, as two pale glints and a mask-like form suspended inside an almost solid black body.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- Does the woman perceive the creature behind her, or is it visible only to us?¿La mujer percibe a la criatura que está detrás de ella o solo podemos verla nosotros?
- What changes when the dark mass stops being a bird and becomes a thought, a fear or a temptation?¿Qué cambia cuando la masa oscura deja de ser un ave y se vuelve un pensamiento, un miedo o una tentación?
- Why might Redon place the moment of contact at the very top of her hair, without ever quite completing it?¿Por qué Redon coloca el contacto en el punto más alto del cabello y nunca termina de consumarlo?

From the workshop I focus on how Redon used the lithographic grain and diagonal hatching to create a background that moves from deep black to pale gray. The woman is modeled in soft tones, with vertical strokes on the sleeve, while the black creature is a dense, velvety mass suspended just above her hair. I am drawn to the wide bone-colored paper margin breathing around the image and to the small printed inscriptions: ODILON REDON at the top and Pl. III below, traces of the printing process.

I see this print as a night sky. At the upper left the darkness is total, like a moonless night, and it lightens toward the right like a pale dawn. The black bird descends like a dark comet, with a striated wing and filaments falling like tails. Inside its head there are two luminous dots like stars and a pale triangular shape that looks like a mask. She, below, remains still under that firmament, with a melancholic gaze, as if waiting for that strange phenomenon to pass over her hair.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
The lady is very still and looks a bit sad, with her hair pulled back and two little strands on the sides of her face. Next to her there is a huge black bird that looks pretend, like a monster from a dream. It has a very big wing and long thin hairs hanging down. Its face is a little scary because it has two shiny dots and a light little triangle like a mask. It is right above her head, as if it wants to touch her hair, but she does not move.
