What you would seeLo que verías
Mounted on a beige linen backing and seen head-on, a small vertical rectangular textile fragment is displayed. The central field is a deep, slightly uneven crimson in a dense plain weave. It is framed by two narrow vertical borders: on the right, a solid black strip edged inward with an ornate scroll in burnt orange and ochre, composed of curling vines and stylized rosettes with dark centers; on the left, a narrower, more frayed remnant of the same scrollwork, its edge ragged and partly lost. The center is divided into two registers by a thin double horizontal line in creamy wool. In the upper register a drop-shaped or palmette-like medallion in pale beige encloses a small reddish inner form and three tiny curling tendrils below. The lower register holds a large rectangle filled with an intricate interlace in cream thread: a continuous ribbon forming figure-eights and interlocking lozenges, with small cross-like knots at the intersections. The top and bottom edges are uneven, frayed and slightly torn, with loose threads and a small notch at the lower right. Even lighting emphasizes the grainy, spongy texture of the wool against the smoother ground, and reveals subtle variations in dye and weave tension.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central crimson field and trace the cream interlace from bottom to top, noticing how the ribbon remains unbroken. Then compare the two dark side borders and the subtle variation in the ochre rosettes. Finally look at the frayed outer edges to see the woven structure and signs of age.
ContextContexto
According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a fragment with part of a clavus from a tunic, dated to 300s–600s CE, from Byzantine-period Egypt, made of wool in tabby ground with inwoven tapestry ornament. Clavi were vertical ornamental bands woven or applied to tunics, widespread in the Late Antique Mediterranean as markers of status. The piece is credited as a Gift of George D. Pratt. The maker and exact findspot are unknown, probably from a dry funerary context that aided preservation. The combination of geometric interlace and stylized vegetal scrolls is characteristic of Coptic-Byzantine textiles of this era.

Curious detailDato curioso
In Byzantine Egyptian textiles the endless interlace seen in the lower panel was created not by embroidery but directly on the loom, by discontinuous weft tapestry weaving that allowed colorful patterns to be inwoven into the tabby ground.

I see a fragment of a clavus, that vertical band that decorated a tunic more than a thousand years ago. I focus on the contrast of materials: the fluffy, thick wool of the deep red against the beige linen backing. I notice the frayed edges, loose threads and uneven wear, signs that it was buried in a dry climate. I admire the tapestry technique over plain weave, especially the cream interlace below, with its precise loops and diamonds.

This small red rectangle reminds me of a window for looking at the ancient sky. I imagine the person who wore this tunic between the years 300 and 600 in Byzantine Egypt, walking under the same stars. That cream interlace of loops and diamonds looks like crossing orbits, knots of the cosmos. And above, the drop-shaped palmette with its three hanging tendrils is like a tiny constellation, a map woven in wool.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a tiny but very old superhero cape. It is strawberry red and has little black strips on the sides with little orange plant drawings that curl like little snails. In the middle there is a cream-colored line that splits it in two. Below there is a light-colored maze that crosses and makes loops and diamonds, I want to trace it with my finger. On top there is a little drop with three tails. It is all frayed.

At the bottom center there is a design woven in light thread: is it an animal, a flower or a geometric interlace with loops and diamonds?
