What you would seeLo que verías

A small horizontal lithograph in black ink on bone-white paper, with strongly irregular, expressive lines. In the center, seen partly from behind, a shirtless man supports a woman as they cross a swollen stream on a fallen tree trunk. He grips a horizontal fence rail with one hand and holds her around the waist with the other; she bends forward, eyes closed or lowered, her long wet-looking skirt clinging to her legs. Both are barefoot and one foot still hovers above the log, suggesting a hesitant, dangerous step. The water is drawn with dense wavy lines that swirl around the trunk and the bases of the trees. In the lower left foreground, two animals appear half-submerged and motionless, probably drowned. Dense trees with thick trunks and dotted, sponge-like foliage frame the scene and darken the background. At far right, in smaller scale, a woman with a staff walks calmly beside three cattle or oxen among the trees. Below the image, lettering gives the London publication details, and the artist's inscription appears at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two bare feet searching for balance on the trunk, then follow the horizontal fence rail that cuts across the scene. Look down into the lower left corner: the animals carried by the water change an idyllic landscape into an emergency. Finally, compare the central couple with the calm figure herding cattle in the background.

ContextContexto

The Flood is a lithograph by British artist Edward Calvert (1799–1883), dated 1829 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which acquired it with the J. H. Wade Fund. The inscription below the image states that it was published in London on October 1, 1829, by Calvert himself. Calvert belonged to the circle of young artists influenced by William Blake, known for visionary pastoral scenes. No specific place or historical flood is identified in the source data, so the scene is probably a rural inundation with biblical or poetic overtones, rather than the documentation of a known event.

Curious detailDato curioso

The artist signed and acted as his own publisher: at lower right it reads “Edw.d Calvert Inven.” and along the bottom edge are his address, 17 Russell Street, Brixton Road, and the date in Roman numerals, MDCCCXXIX, 1829.

I focus on the technique because it explains the emotion. It is a small horizontal lithograph in black ink on bone-colored paper, with an irregular and very expressive line, published in London on October 1, 1829 by Calvert himself. Notice how the water is made of dense wavy lines swirling around the fallen trunk and the trees. The contrast between the deep black and the light background creates that feeling of overflow. Nothing is polished, everything seems drawn with urgency, as if the flood were also dragging the drawing itself.

For me this starless night is a lesson in light. The leafy trees, with thick trunks and sponge-dotted canopies, frame the scene and darken the background like a vegetal eclipse. The water swirls in inky eddies that look like orbits. At the center, the barefoot couple moves in precarious balance on a fallen trunk, clinging to a fence, with one foot still suspended mid-step. And on the right, on a smaller scale, a shepherdess with a staff and three cattle walks calmly, as if she inhabited another sky, unaware of the nearby storm.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This image makes me feel nervous and sad at the same time. A man with no shirt is crossing a very swollen stream on a fallen tree trunk, hugging tightly a woman with a long wet skirt and closed eyes, and both are barefoot with one foot in the air as if they are about to fall. The water makes lots of scary swirls around them. Down on the left there are two little animals in the water that are not moving and I think they drowned. And the strange thing is that on the right there is another woman with a little stick and three little cows walking calmly as if nothing happened.
