What you would seeLo que verías

This is a horizontal color woodblock print with clean contours and flat areas of color. In the foreground, nine fishermen work in a shallow, foaming stream that runs diagonally across the lower part of the image. They wear dark reddish-brown jackets, straw skirts that flare around their hips, and bare legs; some have round white caps and others dark, disheveled hair. Bent forward, leaning back, or half-submerged, they all pull ropes attached to a long dark net that stirs up white foam. At lower right, a small bonfire of twigs gives off a thick column of cream and pale-yellow smoke, made of rounded, cloud-like puffs. The smoke crosses the scene diagonally and rises beyond the top edge. In the middle ground there is a dark-blue river, teal-green hills with dotted, sponge-like texture, dark trees, and pale flowering shrubs. At left, on a rise, stands a small thatched-roof house with a triangular window; inside or beside it a tiny figure can barely be made out. Behind it rises a smooth mountain, red above and blue-green below, under a gray sky that darkens toward the top. In the upper right corner, a rectangular cartouche contains Japanese calligraphy and red accents.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bodies bent in unison in the foreground and follow the ropes toward the net breaking the water. Then follow the smoke in reverse, from the bonfire up to the mountaintop, until you reach the small house. That tiny, still figure changes the scene: the physical toil may be an amusing misunderstanding of a poem about longing.

ContextContexto

This color woodblock print was designed by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) in 1835–36, during Japan's Edo period (1615–1868), and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to the series One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets Explained by an Old Nurse. According to the museum, Hokusai imagined a nurse who tries to illustrate classical poems but misses their subtle allusions, creating a comic gap between text and image. The poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro (about 660–739) speaks of sleeping alone through long autumn nights, separated from a loved one. The nurse instead understood physical exhaustion: fishermen hauling a net upstream.

Curious detailDato curioso

The most surprising visual device is the smoke: it does not drift upward naturally, but forms an almost solid, winding ribbon that crosses the whole composition and links the fishermen's bonfire to the summit of the red mountain.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the meaning change if we read the fishermen's effort as an image of emotional, rather than physical, exhaustion?¿Cómo cambia el sentido si leemos el esfuerzo de los pescadores como imagen de un cansancio emocional y no solo físico?
  2. What role does humor play in approaching a classical poem from a popular, everyday viewpoint?¿Qué papel juega el humor al acercar un poema clásico desde una mirada popular y cotidiana?
  3. Why might the smallest and most distant figure be key to understanding the whole scene?¿Por qué la figura más pequeña y lejana puede ser la clave para entender toda la escena?

I pause to look at how Hokusai built this color woodblock print. The crisp outlines and flat inks hold everything together: the dark blue of the river, the dotted bluish-green of the hills, and the smooth red of the mountain. I am drawn to the cream and pale yellow column of smoke, made of rounded puffs that cuts diagonally across the scene; it is a graphic device to create depth. I also notice the wear of the paper and how the smoke and white foam balance the composition.

What I see here is a landscape that plays with scale, as if it were a sky. The two-tone mountain, red on top and bluish-green below, looks like a planet suspended under a gray sky that darkens toward the top. The thick smoke rising from the bonfire and leaving through the upper edge reminds me of a milky way or a moving constellation. Below, the fishermen pulling the net are tiny dots beneath that vastness, like observers under a cosmos.

These fishermen are working so hard! There are nine of them and they are all pulling a super long dark net in a stream full of foam. Some wear little white hats and others do not, and their straw skirts open in a funny way when they lean over. I like the tiny bonfire at the bottom that makes a giant smoke like fluffy clouds crossing the whole picture. Up on a hill there is a tiny little house where you can barely see someone. It looks like the smoke wants to escape from the paper!
