Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a long, narrow horizontal sheet, much wider than it is tall, shown complete against a light background. The paper is aged, in shades of cream, beige, and pale ochre, with irregular, slightly worn edges, soft stains, and small marks of use. Almost the entire surface is covered with dense handwriting in black ink, arranged in tight horizontal lines. On either side, a vertical red line creates a margin; in those narrower side spaces the script becomes smaller and more compact. Within the main text, short strokes, dots, and occasional words or signs in bright red punctuate the black writing at regular intervals. Near the center, interrupting the lines, there is a solid vermilion-red circle, slightly irregular, which becomes the visual focal point despite having no image inside it. The writing varies in thickness, suggesting a hand-drawn pen and changes in pressure. At the upper right corner there are faint later inscriptions in pencil or faded ink. There are no human figures or landscapes: the visual force comes from the contrast between fragile paper, dark calligraphy, red accents, and the serene geometry of the central circle.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, follow the rhythm of the lines from left to right and notice how the red marks organize the reading. Then move closer to the central circle and the uneven edges. That empty center, surrounded by words, changes the page from a block of text into an object with balance and pause.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 39 (recto) from a Kalpa-sutra, made by an unknown artist in western India, in Gujarat, in the last quarter of the 15th century, circa 1475–1500, using gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper. The Kalpa-sutra is an important Jain text that recounts the lives of the Tirthankaras, especially Mahavira, and is traditionally read during the festival of Paryushan. Its long, horizontal format probably derives from earlier palm-leaf manuscripts. The exact place of production and the identity of the scribe are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The red circle at the center probably preserves the memory of the string hole in palm-leaf manuscripts: even when paper no longer needed a cord to bind the leaves, the mark remained as part of the page's design.

What holds me is how fragile and resilient it is at once. The cream paper with worn edges and soft stains speaks of five centuries of use, of hands passing this elongated leaf during readings. The black ink is surprisingly vivid, but I notice pen pressure variations and the contrast with that vermilion red of the central circle and margin lines. Everything is handmade on a thin support that has survived through time.

I do not see just text, I see a constellation on paper. The horizontal leaf is like a long horizon and the black script forms ordered rows of stars. The red marks are bright signals guiding the reading, like variable stars. And at the center that perfect red circle is a sun or an eclipse frozen in the middle of the sky. It reminds me that many calendars and rituals are born from watching the sky and counting days to know when to celebrate.

It looks like a super long letter that never ends. It is cookie-colored with tiny black letters packed together like ants in a line. On the sides there is a red line as if it were the border to not go outside when coloring. The funniest part is the red circle in the middle, like a sun or a giant button someone stuck there. There are no little drawings of people, but I imagine whoever wrote it must have had a lot of patience to not make a mistake.
