What you would seeLo que verías
An elongated horizontal folio, typical of Jain manuscripts, fills most of the frame against a neutral background. The support is aged ivory paper, with brownish stains from humidity and slightly irregular, worn edges that darken at the corners. Two vertical bands in vermilion red border the writing field on the left and right, with firm brushwork and tiny splatters near the bottom. The text is arranged in seven continuous horizontal lines in a dense, angular black script, punctuated at regular intervals by words or syllables highlighted in bright red. At the center of the folio, a solid red circle with a slightly uneven edge marks the traditional string hole that once held the leaves together. In the upper right corner there are tiny marginal annotations in black and red. Light is even and diffuse, revealing the matte texture of the paper, the opacity of the ink, and the velvety saturation of the red pigment. The scale is intimate, intended for close reading and handling with both hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the alternating rhythm of black and red that structures the reading. Move to the central red circle and see how it interrupts the text without breaking it. Look for the stains and marginal notes at the edges, traces of centuries of use and preservation.

Curious detailDato curioso
Kalpa-sutra manuscripts from Western India kept the long horizontal palm-leaf format even after paper was adopted, preserving the shape and string-hole of earlier leaf books.

What holds my attention is the ivory colored paper, so alive despite the brownish damp stains and the worn edges. I see the two vertical vermilion red bands that firmly frame the text and the solid red circle in the center, the old string hole. The black ink is dense and matte, and the red highlights syllables with a velvety saturation. I think about the recorded gum tempera and ink technique and how the soft diffuse light reveals every irregularity, every little splash, like a trace of time and ritual use.

I do not see stars here, but I do see a format that reminds me of measuring the sky with my hands. This long horizontal folio seems made to be held close, like an intimate map. I count seven straight lines of black writing, interrupted by bright red touches, like signals. The red side bands are like the borders of a constellation, and the solid red central circle is a small sun. I like to imagine that dot marked the center of the portable universe for whoever read it.

This paper looks very old and long like a long napkin. It is cream colored with little brown spots and it has two red stripes on the sides, like the edges of a road. In the middle there are seven rows with tiny black letters and some words in red that shine a lot. In the center there is a red circle like a big button. I imagine someone reading it with both hands, very close to their face, turning the pages very carefully.
