What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical print in black ink on bone-coloured, slightly grainy paper, enclosed by a thick linear border. The composition is split into two zones by dense clouds and bands of diagonal hatching that suggest sky and distance. Above, amid swirling clouds drawn with short curved strokes, tall heavenly doors stand open. Only the lowest part of the ascending figure remains visible as it disappears upward, at a noticeably small scale: bare feet, the hem of a garment and one hand can be made out. The artist's monogram appears in the upper left corner. Below, a tightly packed group of kneeling figures surrounds a rough central rock, its surface scratched with vertical lines and dark patches and its flattened top marked by small footprint-like shapes. The witnesses wear broad tunics, cloaks and mantles whose folds are modelled with close parallel and cross-hatching. Most tilt their heads back and gaze upward; some press their hands together in prayer, others open them in amazement. Careful details reward slow looking: tight curls, bearded profiles, a hooded head bowed at right, turned backs that block our view, and in the foreground the sole of a kneeling man's shoe beside the long hem of his robe.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the top, where what matters most is almost gone, and then follow the apostles' upturned faces. Next look at the flat top of the rock between them and the small marks left there. The scene is less about the departing figure than about those who remain below, looking at an absence.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this woodcut, The Ascension, is by the German artist Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538), dates to c. 1515, and was given by The Print Club of Cleveland. The title places it within The Fall and Redemption of Man, probably a narrative print series moving from the Fall to salvation. It depicts the episode told in the Acts of the Apostles in which Christ ascends to heaven before his followers after the Resurrection. Woodcut, made by carving a wooden block and printing it in ink, allowed religious images to circulate in multiple impressions in early sixteenth-century Germany.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual fact is that Christ is barely present: only feet, drapery and a hand remain visible as he passes through the heavenly doors, while tradition holds that his footprints stayed on the Mount of Olives.

  1. What does it do to the story to show Christ almost vanished rather than triumphant in the centre?¿Qué cambia en el relato mostrar a Cristo casi desaparecido en vez de triunfante en el centro?
  2. How do the turned backs and crowded bodies make the viewer feel like one more witness on the ground?¿Cómo logran las espaldas y los cuerpos apretados que quien mira se sienta un testigo más en la tierra?
  3. What is the role of the empty sky and the marked rock between heaven and earth?¿Qué papel juegan el cielo vacío y la roca marcada entre el cielo y la tierra?

I focus on the bone-colored paper and its light grain, because that is where the history of this black ink print lives. The wooden block left firm black lines and shading made with parallel and crosshatching that shapes the folds of cloaks and the rough rock in the center. I am amazed how the thick border contains everything and the clouds made with short strokes separate the two levels. Above, just a pair of feet and a hand remind us of the natural wear of such an old yet still legible impression.

From my perspective, this image is a study of the sky as vertical space. The dense clouds and diagonal hatched bands create an atmosphere that divides the earthly from the heavenly. Above, the celestial doors open among swirls and reveal the tiny ascending figure, almost lost in the height. Below, the group looks upward with tilted necks, as if tracking a trajectory. Even the rock with marks looks like an observation point from which to measure that distance between earth and sky.

I like searching for details as if it were a game! At the top, among the swirly clouds, you can barely see the person going up to the sky, just bare feet and a little bit of clothing. Below there are many people kneeling around a big rough stone that has tiny footprints on top. Everyone looks up with mouths open in amazement, some with hands together and others with hands open. You can even see the sole of a shoe and many cloaks with little lines.

At the top among the clouds, what part of the body of the ascending figure can still be seen before disappearing through the doors?

    HintPista

Look at the area just below the celestial doors, they are very small compared to the group below.

  2. #2

In the center of the group looking up, what rocky object with a flattened top and footprint-like marks stands out among the kneeling figures?

    HintPista

It is right in the middle, surrounded by tunics and cloaks with hatched folds.

  3. #3

If you count carefully, how many main tones form this black and white print on bone-colored paper?

    HintPista

Think of the dark ink, the light paper and an intermediate tone that appears in the soft shadows.
