What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black ink on aged, cream-colored paper, enclosed by a fine rectangular border. At the center is a large ornamental shield, or cartouche, whose surface bears text in Italian and French in several sizes and styles of lettering, including the date MDCXLVI. Crowning the composition is a nude, chubby putto with curly hair, seated with his legs crossed and his gaze lowered. With each hand he touches the head of a spotted feline —perhaps a leopard— that flanks him; both animals open their mouths and show fangs, ribbons, and curling scrolls. From those heads, long skins or draperies fall down the sides of the shield like curtains, modeled with dense hatching, parallel lines, and deep shadows that suggest weight, folds, and softness. The lower part narrows into luxuriant volutes and ends in a ram's skull seen from the front, with large curved horns and empty eye sockets. The background is almost empty, with the paper slightly stained and the plate mark visible. At the top corners appear the numbers “218” and “I.”; below, inscriptions identify the maker and the publisher. The overall effect combines tenderness, fantasy, and a slightly unsettling air.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the child at the top and notice how calmly he sits between two snarling animals. Then follow the draped skins downward until they lead to the ram's skull at the bottom. Finally, read the cartouche as an object —not only as a page— imagining it carved in wood or stone.

ContextContexto

This etching is the title page of a collection of ornamental designs published in 1646, according to the source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art and the inscription visible on the plate itself. Its author was Stefano della Bella (1610–1664), an Italian printmaker known for his etchings. The text, in Italian and French, presents the series as a collection of caprices, cartouches, and ornaments, and mentions Paris and the publisher Pierre Mariette the Younger. In the 17th century, books of models like this one circulated inventions that goldsmiths, sculptors, painters, and other craftspeople could adapt. It is not known, from the data provided here, which specific workshops used this design.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: the putto touches one of the spotted felines with total nonchalance, as if petting a house cat, even though the animal is baring its fangs just inches from his leg.

I focus on paper and ink. This vertical etching in black on a creamy background shows the plate mark and age spots, with tones ranging from light beige to deep brown. I look at the central cartouche with text in Italian and French and the date MDCXLVI. At the top, the putto with soft lines contrasts with the hanging skins, worked with dense hatching and shadows to create weight and folds. Below, the ram skull closes the composition with its curved horns.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this frontispiece as a small baroque cosmos. The putto at the top looks like a central star holding two feline constellations, their mouths open as if roaring light. From them descend two dark nebulae, those skins or draperies falling like cosmic curtains with heavy folds. Below, the ram skull is like a fossil moon anchoring the orbit. Everything floats in the creamy void of the paper, a universe of fantasy etched in 1646.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at the chubby little baby sitting on top! He is touching the heads of two big spotty kitties, but those kitties show their fangs and look like angry leopards. From their heads hang furry little blankets falling like curtains all the way down. And at the bottom, there is a ram skull with big curly horns and little holes for eyes! It scares me a little but also makes me laugh. Everything is drawn with tiny black lines on cookie-colored paper.
