ink, gold, and colors on paper
What you would seeLo que verías
A single vertical sheet of aged paper is shown against a pale background, with rounded corners and slightly irregular edges. The paper is creamy beige, mottled with brown stains from moisture and wear, stronger along the bottom and at the corners; there are also small scratches and whitish marks, an elongated smudge near the lower edge, and slight surface loss. Across this quiet ground are five spacious lines of Arabic calligraphy in black ink, read from right to left and separated by generous space. The strokes combine tall, slender verticals with low, sweeping curves; smaller diacritical dots and vocalization marks float above and below the main letters. The writing does not fill the page: it leaves wide margins that draw attention to the rhythm of each line. Between the lines, shifted toward the left, are two small gold rosettes with dark centers and radiating petals, like miniature flowers or suns. Their shine contrasts with the matte ink and the slightly grainy, fibrous texture of the paper. There are no figures, landscapes, or decorative borders; the whole composition rests on the tension between emptiness, black line, and two flashes of gold.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the wide empty margins, then follow the five lines from right to left, even if you cannot read Arabic, noticing how the tall strokes and deep curves create a rhythm. Next look for the two small gold rosettes between the lines. That detail changes the reading: the page is not only written text, it is also a carefully guided visual and recitation space.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this folio is the left side of a bifolium — a folded sheet forming two pages — from a Qur'an manuscript made in Egypt during the Mamluk Sultanate (1250–1517) and broadly dated to the 1300s–1400s. Its maker is unknown. It was produced with ink, gold, and colors on paper and contains verses from the 53rd chapter, Surah An-Najm, “The Star.” The source notes that, in Islamic tradition, the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in Arabic in the 600s, which helps explain why calligraphy became celebrated as the highest art form. We do not know who copied this page, where it was kept, or how large the complete manuscript was; it probably belonged to a larger codex now incomplete or dispersed.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two gold rosettes are not merely decorative: in Qur'an manuscripts, markers like these often indicate verse divisions, helping the reader navigate and recite the text.

If you get close you will see the paper is not perfect: it is creamy beige with brown humidity stains, darker at the bottom and corners, with scratches and an elongated smudge near the edge. That tells its age, 14th to 15th century, Mamluk Egypt. I am intrigued by the five lines of black ink, with so much air around them, and how the tiny dots float above the letters. Above all I look at the two golden rosettes shifted to the left: their shine contrasts with the matte ink and the grainy fiber. We touch nothing, just observe that fragile balance.

What strikes me is that this page holds verses from sura 53, An-Najm, which means The Star. It makes sense that it is written on light paper like a night sky, with five black lines moving like constellations. The two golden rosettes with a dark center look to me like miniature suns or stars marking a pause. This is only the left side of a bifolio, part of a larger Qur'an now scattered, made in ink and gold. It makes me think how a community centuries ago linked sacred text and cosmos with just line and glimmer.

It looks like an old cookie-colored sheet with little brown spots at the bottom, as if it got wet long ago. It has five rows of very pretty black letters that go up and down, with lots of empty space around them. What I like most are the two little golden flowers that shine, one higher and one lower, toward the left. There are no drawings of people or landscapes, just lines and two dots of gold. It feels calm to me, as if the page is breathing and the little stars are watching over it.
