lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
Vertical black-and-white lithograph depicting a narrow street in a French town under a dramatic cloudy sky. In the foreground, a group of about fifteen figures fills the cobbled street: peasants, women in bonnets and full skirts, a man on a horse or mule seen head-on, playing children, and two figures seated on the ground on the left near a building façade. At center and in the background, a row of old houses made of stone and half-timbering stretches back, with irregular roofs, tall smoking chimneys, dormer windows and peeling walls that show age and decay. On the left, a three-story building with ornate Gothic windows, balconies and carved tracery contrasts with the humbler, more ruinous structures on the right. Light appears to come from the upper left, creating strong contrasts between bright areas and dense shadows rendered with fine stippling and cross-hatching. Small details include a hanging lantern, laundry, foliage on a balcony, voluminous clouds and thin plumes of smoke rising. Inscriptions read «Pl. 103» at top and artist and publisher details at bottom.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the street from bottom to top, from the crowd of passersby to the smoking chimneys. Then pause on the contrast between the ornate house on the left and the dilapidated façades opposite. Notice how the heavily worked sky rendered with stipple gives depth and drama to an everyday scene.
ContextContexto
Work by British artist Richard Parkes Bonington (1802–1828), dated 1827 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Prints department as Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. It is a lithograph classified within 19th-century English printmaking, though its subject is an urban view on the outskirts of Besançon in eastern France, a town Bonington sketched during his travels on the continent. The source record provides no additional description. Bonington, English by birth but trained in France, was known for Romantic and picturesque landscapes and architectural views widely circulated through lithography at the time.

I focus on how this 1827 black and white lithograph still holds the vibration of ink on paper, I see the fine stippling and crosshatching that build the dense shadows and the cloudy dramatic sky over Besançon, I am struck by the contrast between the three story building on the left, with its gothic windows and carved balconies, and the humble crumbling houses on the right with smoking chimneys, the cobbled street and its roughly fifteen figures remind us how fragile paper is and how precious each printed detail remains.

I look at the sky in this small street and even though it is daytime I imagine night falling over Besançon, those voluminous clouds rendered in dense grays remind me of a sky about to fill with stars, I notice how light comes from the upper left and casts long shadows on the cobbled street, I wonder if someone used to watch the moon from those irregular rooftops and dormer windows, the soft smoke rising from the chimneys looks like a nebula and the whole scene feels suspended under a changing atmosphere.

I love counting people in this street because there are so many, about fifteen, there are kids playing, women with bonnets and big skirts, a man on a horse coming toward us and two people sitting on the ground on the left, I also hunt for hidden things like the hanging lantern, the laundry hanging out and the little plant on the balcony, the houses look crooked and very old with different roofs and chimneys puffing smoke, it feels like everyone came out to chat under a sky full of puffy clouds.
