Linen: needle lace (Burano Point)

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is shown horizontally, long and narrow, stretching across nearly the entire image over a plain black background. It is a strip of ivory lace with rounded ends: the left end curves broadly, while the right finishes more straightly, with softly softened corners. Its upper and lower edges are trimmed with small, continuous waves, forming a delicate scalloped border. Inside, almost transparent areas alternate with denser motifs. Over a very fine ground that is barely visible, a winding vine moves from left to right. Small branches, leaves, curling tendrils, and clusters of round flowers or fruits, similar to bunches of berries, grow from the main stem. The motifs are related but not identical; the rhythm repeats, yet each section varies slightly, revealing the handwork. The texture looks light and flexible, with fine threads contrasting the open mesh against the raised plant designs. There are no human figures or reference objects, so the true scale is difficult to judge; the photograph isolates the textile as if it were floating in darkness. Seen closely, tiny irregularities appear in the stitches and along the outline.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the main vine from end to end and notice how it never travels in a straight line. Then look for the small berries and curled tendrils: what first appears to be a repeating pattern gradually reveals small handmade variations.

ContextContexto

This is a pair of lace lappets dated to the 1700s and attributed to Burano, Italy. It is made of linen using needle lace, known as Burano Point, according to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art. Lappets were the long streamers that framed the face as part of a larger lace headdress, or “lace head,” made up of three pieces. The museum notes that very few complete examples from the 1700s and 1800s survive, and it points to objects 1936.489 and 1936.490 as a complete headdress. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the band looks almost weightless, its plant motifs are not printed: they are built stitch by stitch over a nearly invisible mesh ground, which is why the flowers seem to float against the black background.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the reading of this lace change when we imagine it framing a face rather than lying flat?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de este encaje cuando lo imaginamos enmarcando un rostro y no extendido en plano?
  2. What does the repetition with small variations tell us about the time and skill of its maker?¿Qué nos dice la repetición con pequeñas variaciones sobre el tiempo y la habilidad de quien lo hizo?
  3. Why do fragile textiles like this survive so rarely in complete form?¿Por qué los textiles frágiles como este rara vez sobreviven completos?

What you see here is one of those pieces that makes me hold my breath. It is a very long ivory band on a black background, with wavy edges and rounded ends. Inside, a vine with leaves, tendrils and clusters of berries runs over an almost invisible net. It is all linen worked by hand with a needle, the famous Burano stitch from the 18th century. I pause at the tiny irregularities: each slightly different knot and outline reminds me that patient hands made this without a pattern, just with thread and light.

To me this lace strip is like a constellation stretched horizontally. Against the deep black, like a night sky, a long pale band with scalloped edges appears. Inside, the vine moves from left to right like an orbit with twigs, leaves and clusters of round fruits that look like tiny star systems. It is fascinating to think that this 18th century fragment was part of a larger headdress of three pieces that framed a face, although today we see it floating alone, without human scale, as if suspended in space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic headband! It is super long, the color of vanilla ice cream, with little wavy edges like tiny waves. In the middle it has a little plant that curls around with leaves and tiny balls like little grapes. No two parts are exactly the same, because someone made it by hand a very long time ago in Italy. I imagine if you put it on it would sit around your face like a soft crown. It is so thin it looks like if you blew hard it could fly like a feather against the black background.
