What you would seeLo que verías

A studio photograph shows a single standing wooden figure, seen almost frontally, against a smooth ground that fades from near-black above to pale grey below. The surface is lit softly from the upper left, leaving a small shadow to the right of its uneven base. Saint Andrew fills the vertical frame; without a scale reference his actual size cannot be judged from the image alone. Behind his shoulders rise the two rough beams of an X-shaped cross, one steadied by his raised left hand, its fingers long and stiff against the wood. His lowered right hand hangs open beside his hip. He has heavy-lidded eyes, a high forehead, dense curled hair falling to his shoulders and a full, textured beard, giving him a careworn, middle-aged presence. He wears a belted undergarment and a voluminous cloak whose upper folds are cut into deep, angular, almost crumpled planes, while the skirt falls in long straight grooves to his feet. The oak is mid-to-dark brown with visible vertical grain, knots, chips and abrasions, and only faint traces of former paint remain. The small irregular plinth looks especially worn at the front.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the X behind his head and shoulders, because it identifies him before his face does. Then look down through the cloak’s sharp, angular folds to the long, worn grain of the lower robe. The contrast between the tightly carved curls and the hands’ weary slackness changes the saint from a symbol into a tired man.

ContextContexto

Saint Andrew, carved in the Netherlands around 1515–20 by the artist known as the Master of Elsloo, an oak figure with traces of paint. The source states that apostle figures were produced in large numbers in the eastern Netherlands in the early 1500s. His X-shaped cross marks him as Andrew. He was probably one figure from an apostle series, possibly placed above choir stalls or on an apostelbalk, a beam with Christ at its centre separating the nave from the sanctuary. The master takes his name from a polychrome group in the Augustinuskerk, Elsloo, and is probably Jan van Oel, active around Roermond c. 1500–1520. Its exact original church is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Master of Elsloo is not a documented signature but a name of convenience: art historians gave it to the sculptor after a polychromed Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child that survives in the Augustinuskerk in Elsloo.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the figure change when we imagine it high on a beam, far above the congregation, rather than at eye level?¿Cómo cambia la figura si la imaginamos en lo alto de una viga, muy por encima de los fieles, en vez de a la altura de los ojos?
  2. What does the contrast between the crisp cloak folds and the exhausted face suggest about sanctity in this period?¿Qué sugiere el contraste entre los pliegues nítidos del manto y el rostro exhausto sobre la santidad en esta época?
  3. Now that almost all the paint has gone, do we read the oak itself as part of the work’s meaning, or mainly as loss?

What holds my attention is the oak surface. Its color shifts from dark brown to lighter brown, with the vertical grain clearly visible and several knots and chips from age. Almost no paint remains, only faint traces tucked into the folds. I look at the cloak: up top it forms deep, angular planes, almost like crumpled paper, and below it falls in long straight grooves to the feet. The small base and the heavily textured beard show the wear and the rubbing at the front very clearly.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like how the light comes from above on the left, like a side star that reveals volume. It casts a short shadow to the right of the base and highlights the two rough timbers of the X-shaped cross behind the shoulders. The figure fills the tall frame and, with no scale in view, I cannot tell its real height. I notice the left hand with long fingers against the wood and the right hand open by the hip, all set against a background that fades from black to light gray.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

He looks like a tired man with lots of curly hair and a fluffy beard I want to comb. His cloak has many wrinkles with little peaks and long lines going down to his feet, like a folded blanket. With one hand he holds two sticks crossed like an X and with the other he holds nothing. He stands on a tiny scratchy little rock. His eyes are almost closed as if he is thinking about something serious and he looks at me from just a bit up high.
