What you would seeLo que verías

The piece sits at the center of the image against a plain ground that fades from black at the top to soft gray below, like a studio surface lit with diffuse light. It is a napkin ring: a short, hollow cylinder seen slightly from above, so we can make out its curved outside, its round upper rim, and part of its interior. The inside and the rims are of smooth, warm gold-toned metal, with gentle reflections and faint marks of texture or use on the inner wall. The outside is covered in glossy enamel over a pale turquoise-blue ground. Across that ground runs a continuous decorative band. At the visible center is a butterfly in profile, its wings deep blue with orange dots, salmon pink, creamy white, and green on its body, surrounded by fine, curling spiral stems. Around it are small and medium flowers: a red-orange bloom with radiating petals beside the butterfly, and white, blue, and purple blossoms scattered through the foliage. Above and below, two black bands patterned with repeated turquoise motifs frame the scene, edged by thin reddish and gold lines. There are no people and no text; its human scale is implied, as it is a table object that would fit in one hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the butterfly at the center and follow the thin scrolling stems as they carry your eye around the curved surface. Then look at the contrast between the warm, plain gold inside and the dense, colorful enamel outside. A small detail changes the reading: the decoration has no single front; it is meant to keep unfolding as the ring is turned in the hand.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is *Napkin Ring with Butterflies*, by an unknown maker, dated to the early 1900s and attributed to Japan in the Meiji period (1868–1912) or the Taishō period (1912–26). It is made in cloisonné enamel and belongs to the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits it as a gift in memory of Mr. and Mrs. D. Z. Norton. Napkin rings are associated with Western table settings, so this Japanese-made example probably reflects the period's cross-cultural production and trade, although its specific workshop, owner, and place of use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

In cloisonné, thin metal wires are fixed to the surface to form small compartments, and each compartment is filled with enamel of a different color; here you can see how those fine outlines separate the turquoise ground from every petal and butterfly wing.

I pause on the surface, that light, glossy turquoise of the cloisonné enamel that seems to float over the golden metal. I look at the butterfly with dark wings dotted in orange and a green body, surrounded by red, white and purple flowers and curling spiral stems that wrap around the cylinder. The black bands with turquoise motifs on top and bottom hold the scene like a frame. Inside, the smooth gold with tiny marks reminds me this table object fit in a hand and was used.

This ring makes me think of a tiny planet. The turquoise background feels like a daytime sky seen up close, and the butterfly with very dark blue wings dotted in orange looks like a constellation traveling among flowers that are like red, white and purple stars. The spiral stems spin like orbits. The black bands on the edges are the space that holds everything together. It is curious to imagine an everyday object, hollow and golden inside, as a portable universe for the table.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a little ring for a napkin! Outside it is shiny turquoise blue and has a very pretty butterfly with dark wings and little orange dots, as if it were flying among red, white and purple flowers. There are curly little stems everywhere. On the top and bottom it has a black border with tiny patterns. Inside it is golden and fits in my hand. I imagine rolling up my napkin, sliding it through the little hole and watching the butterfly go all the way around.
