What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white lithograph showing the ruins of the Château de Susinio seen from its dry moat. On the left, in the foreground, a massive stone wall dominates with rough, layered masonry, cracks and fallen blocks at its foot; a row of blind arches runs along its upper edge and a tall, sharply pointed buttress casts a dark shadow. Behind it rise crenellated round towers, one partly collapsed and another with small bushes growing on its parapet. The central ground is an uneven, grassy moat with winding sandy paths, tufts of grass, scrub and eroded ridges. Four tiny figures animate the hollow: two women in long skirts and bonnets standing and conversing near the wall, and two more seated higher on the slope. On the right, atop a grassy mound, a solitary cloaked figure with a hat stands beside a small dog, looking outward. The background opens to a bright, flat plain dotted with distant trees under a dramatic sky filled with heavy clouds broken by luminous gaps, creating strong light-and-dark contrasts typical of Romantic printmaking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the heavy wall on the left and follow its shadow down to the tiny figures in the moat, then let your eye wander along the winding paths toward the bright horizon. Notice how the contrast between the massive ruin and the small human presence shifts the sense of scale and evokes the Romantic theme of nature overtaking architecture.

I pause on that foreground wall to the left, all rough and cracked, with fallen blocks at its base that show how time undoes stone. I see the blind arches above and the pointed buttress so eroded it looks ready to give way. The black-and-white lithograph captures relief with deep shadows, perfect for documenting decay. I think about how to stabilize those cylindrical towers with vegetation on top without erasing their history.

What captivates me most is the dramatic sky, full of dense clouds with bright openings where light pours through as if lighting a stage. That play of light and shadow over the plain and the dry moat reminds me of nights observing contrasts on the moon. Although everything is in grays, you can feel the breadth of the Breton plain in the background, with scattered trees beneath that shifting vault so beloved by Romantics seeking the sublime in nature.

This castle looks like it is from a fairy tale but it is all broken, as if a giant had taken bites out of it. The big wall has points and holes and next to it there are round towers with little plants on top. Down in the dry moat there are four tiny people, two ladies with long skirts chatting and another figure with a hat and cape standing with a little dog looking at everything. I imagine running along those small paths among the grasses and hiding between the stones.
