What you would seeLo que verías
Black-and-white lithograph on light ivory paper, arranged in two stacked studies. In the upper half, on the left, a pair of wooden clogs seen in foreshortening, their hollow interiors and curved soles built with cross-hatching and soft shadows; on the right, a wide-brimmed straw hat with a dark ribbon trailing downward, its woven texture suggested by fine strokes and smudged lithographic crayon. Both objects appear to float against the empty paper, grounded only by faint cast shadows. A handwritten signature 'ch. J.' sits between them. Printed text in the upper left reads 'COURS DE DESSIN / NATURE MORTE / LITHOGRAPHIE D'APRÈS NATURE PAR CHARLES JACQUES / DOPTER EDITEUR, A PARIS'. In the lower half, a second still life: in the foreground, three elongated carrots and two turnips or beets with tangled leafy tops, behind them a stout ceramic pitcher with a handle, its mottled surface and irregular rim rendered with denser shading. The contrast is stronger here, giving weight and dampness to the vegetables. At the bottom, the imprint 'Déposé / DOPTER, IMP. ÉDITEUR, 29, RUE DE MADAME / PARIS' and the number 4 at the top right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by reading the two tiers as separate lessons and compare the airy handling of the hat with the heavier shading of the pitcher. Notice the shadows under the clogs and around the vegetable roots that anchor the forms in emptiness. Pay attention to how the white of the paper acts as light.
ContextContexto
Work by French artist Charles-Émile Jacque (1813–1894), associated with the Barbizon School and known for rural scenes and etchings of livestock. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this lithograph is dated c. 1888–94 and belongs to his instructional series Cours de Dessin, published by Dopier in Paris. These nature morte plates served as drawing models for students, featuring humble peasant objects valued for their naturalism in 19th-century France. No specific documentation about this plate number 4 is provided in the source data, but it was probably part of a larger pedagogical set of studies after nature rather than a unique exhibition print.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What do the chosen objects — clogs, hat, pitcher and root vegetables — suggest about the everyday rural life Jacque wanted students to observe?¿Qué nos dicen los objetos elegidos —zuecos, sombrero, jarra y hortalizas— sobre la vida cotidiana que Jacque quería enseñar a dibujar?
- How does isolating the objects on an empty background change their presence compared to a full interior scene?¿Cómo cambia la sensación de los objetos al estar aislados sobre un fondo vacío en lugar de en una mesa o interior?
- What shifts when we view this image as an artwork versus as a teaching exercise for learning to draw?¿Qué diferencia hay entre mirar esta imagen como obra de arte y como ejercicio para aprender a dibujar?

I focus on the light ivory paper and how the graphite sits on it. At the top I see the hollow wooden clogs and the straw hat with its dark ribbon hanging down, all built with fine strokes and cross-hatched shadows. Below, the carrots and turnips have denser, damper shading, and the pot-bellied jug shows a mottled surface. As plate number 4 from the Cours de Dessin, I understand its teaching purpose: to train volume and texture using humble rural objects.

I see two constellations of objects floating in an ivory paper sky. Above, the clogs and the straw hat look like two orbiting bodies, with the handwritten signature ch. J. between them like a middle star. Below, the carrots, turnips and jug form another denser and darker system. It intrigues me that this lithograph by Charles-Émile Jacque was made to teach looking, just as a star chart teaches us to distinguish shapes in emptiness.

They look like floating toys! On top there are funny wooden shoes that look like little canoes and a big straw hat with a little ribbon hanging down. Below there are three long carrots with twisty leaves, two chubby turnips and a pot-bellied little jug with a handle. Everything is drawn only in gray and black on light paper. I like that they are not on a table, it is as if they are flying so we can draw them better.
¡Parecen juguetes flotando!
