What you would seeLo que verías
The lid of a small rectangular casket is shown from directly above, centered against a smooth gradient gray background that isolates it. The object is cast in bronze with a very dark, near-black patina, warmed by brown highlights where light catches the raised relief. At the exact center sits a small spherical brass knob with a muted golden sheen and slight wear. From it four raised ribs extend in a cross to the middle of each side, dividing the surface into four triangular fields. On each rib lies a finely modeled oak branch with lobed leaves and visible veins spreading toward the corners. The ground between the branches has a fine stippled texture and is framed by a double border: an inner beaded band of tiny pearls and an outer band of scrolling Renaissance foliage with curling vines and acanthus-like leaves. The edges of the lid are straight and slightly raised, with crisp right-angle corners. Top lighting creates soft specular highlights on the highest points and deep shadows in the recesses, emphasizing the tactile, metallic quality and ornamental density of this book-sized luxury accessory.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the golden knob at the center and follow the four oak branches outward to the corners. Then trace the double border, noticing how beading and scrolling vines frame the composition. Pay attention to how light separates the stippled background from the polished relief of the leaves.
ContextContexto
This is the lid of a writing casket attributed to Severo da Ravenna, active in northern Italy from about 1496 to about 1543, dated to around 1525. It is an Italian 16th-century work in bronze, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Department of European Painting and Sculpture. According to museum records, the interior of the casket is divided into four compartments for storing writing implements and potting sand for blotting ink. Such portable writing sets were used by humanists, merchants and officials, blending practical function with classical revival decoration. No specific information about the original patron is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
Bronze writing caskets like this one often held a small container of fine sand, called a pounce pot, sprinkled over fresh ink to dry it before blotting paper was invented.

If you look closely, the first thing you notice is the patina, that deep almost-black bronze with brownish highlights where the light hits. It is a rectangular lid, small like a book, with straight raised edges. At the center there is a golden brass knob, slightly worn. From it four ribs extend in a cross, each with finely modeled oak leaf branches showing lobes and veins. Between them there is a granular dotted background and a double border: one with tiny pearls and one with interlaced Renaissance foliage scrolls. Everything is raised and tactile, made to be touched and to last.

This lid reminds me of a sky map. The central knob is like a small golden sun and from it four ribs extend in a cross, like meridians dividing the world into four triangles. Each quadrant has its own constellation of oak leaves opening toward the corners, on a granular background that looks like stardust. Around it, the double border of pearls and vegetal scrolls works as the frame of a portable universe. It was part of a writing casket, with four compartments inside for ink and sand, a miniature cosmos for traveling humanists and merchants.

It looks like the lid of a small treasure chest. It is dark and shiny, like dark chocolate, with a little golden button in the middle like a marble. From that button four paths go out making a cross and on each path there is a little branch with oak leaves, with swirls that look like vines. Around there are dots like sand and two pretty frames, one with little pearls and one with tangled leafy plants. If you touch it, it must feel bumpy with little hills and holes. People long ago kept writing things inside it.
