wood engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a black-and-white wood engraving in horizontal format with an arched top, printed on aged paper whose margins show wear, creases and small tears at the corners. At the top the masthead reads «HARPER'S WEEKLY» and at the bottom «THE DRIVE IN THE CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER, 1860». The scene presents an open landscape of gentle rolling hills and dirt drives converging toward the distant background. In the immediate foreground on the left, a light carriage drawn by two horses carries two men in top hats, one holding a whip, with a small dog running beneath the wheels; nearby two uniformed figures stand observing. Across the middle ground and to the right, numerous elegant open carriages, horseback riders and side-saddle riders in long skirts and hats crowd the drive in a dynamic, overlapping procession. Details include crinoline dresses, parasols, horse harnesses and fine hatching that suggests sky and shadow. The light is diffuse, rendered through dense cross-hatching that builds volume and texture in fabrics, foliage and dust. In the distance scattered trees, tent-like structures held by guy ropes and tiny strolling figures complete the park vista.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the foreground carriage on the left and follow the diagonal flow of carriages and horses toward the center. Notice how overlapping wheels and figures create a sense of busy traffic and motion. Look for small anchors of everyday life — the side-saddle rider seen from behind at center and the dog under the carriage — that ground the spectacle.

I focus on the material side: a black and white horizontal print with rounded upper corners, printed on aged creamy paper with margins showing wear, creases and small tears at the corners. At the top it reads HARPER'S WEEKLY and at the bottom the title THE DRIVE IN THE CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER, 1860. Volume in fabrics, foliage and dust on the road is built with fine crosshatched lines. As an 1860 wood engraving by Winslow Homer for illustrated press, it strikes me as fragile and in need of protection from light.
Arriba se lee HARPER'S WEEKLY y abajo el título THE DRIVE IN THE CENTRAL PARK, NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER, 1860.

Even though it is not a night sky, I am drawn to how the diffuse September light is rendered over this open landscape of soft hills and dirt roads converging in the distance. I notice the fine hatching that suggests sky and shadow and the crosshatched shading that models each figure. In the background there are scattered trees, tents held with ropes and tiny silhouettes of strollers. This urban leisure scene, published in Harper's Weekly, records how the elite and middle class used Central Park, partially opened in the late 1850s, as a new space to see and be seen.

I love to search for things in this picture! I see lots of fancy carriages and horses everywhere, riders on horseback and ladies riding sidesaddle with long skirts and hats. In the foreground on the left there is a light carriage pulled by two horses carrying two men in top hats, one holding a whip, and underneath a little dog running under the wheels. Next to them two uniformed figures stand watching. I also see crinoline dresses, parasols and big carriage wheels. In the back there are hills, trees and even tents. It looks like a very busy and dusty day.
