What you would seeLo que verías

Black-and-white wood engraving in horizontal format with a soft vignetted oval border. In the foreground on the left, a dense column of infantry troops advances across a wooden trestle bridge with X-pattern railings; they carry backpacks, rifles with bayonets on their shoulders and caps, while a few mounted officers raise arms to direct the march. The bridge stretches diagonally toward the distant right, fading into the horizon lined with cross-shaped telegraph poles. At center, two small wooden tollhouses with gabled roofs sit on stone piers, alongside the bridge’s drawbridge frames. Beneath the deck, the Potomac River reflects moonlight. The night sky fills more than half the composition: heavily hatched clouds, a bright full moon partially veiled, and faint stars. Moonlight creates silvery reflections on the water and soft rims on clouds. The wood-engraving technique is evident in fine parallel lines, dense crosshatching and strong contrast. A caption in capital letters runs along the bottom edge identifying the scene. The overall scale feels panoramic, with a solemn, hushed nocturnal atmosphere.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the column of soldiers in the foreground and trace the bridge to the far horizon to feel its depth. Then look up at the sky, where the moon and hatched clouds frame the action and set the nocturnal tone. Notice the moon’s reflection under the bridge, a quiet detail that balances human movement with the stillness of the river.

ContextContexto

This 1861 work is by Winslow Homer (American, 1836–1910), known for his Civil War illustrations for illustrated weeklies such as Harper’s Weekly. The title records the advance guard of the Union Army crossing the Long Bridge over the Potomac at 2 a.m. on May 24, 1861, at the war’s outset as Federal forces moved into Virginia. It is a wood engraving, the standard reproductive print medium for mass press illustration in the nineteenth century. The impression is held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund. No further description is given in the source data, but the historical event is well documented as part of the occupation of northern Virginia.

Curious detailDato curioso

Winslow Homer was only 25 when he made this early Civil War illustration; his work as an artist-correspondent gave Northern readers one of their first visual reports of Union troops on the move.

I pause to look at how this wood engraving is made in black and white. Notice the contrast between the deep black of the night sky and the white of the full moon. Very fine lines create the clouds with crosshatching and the silvery reflections on the water of the Potomac. The wooden bridge with its X-pattern railing fades diagonally into the distance carrying the whole column of soldiers. It was work made for the illustrated press, designed to read clearly even on magazine paper.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What captivates me most is the night sky that fills more than half of the image. The full moon shines veiled among textured clouds and leaves a trail of light on the river. You can still make out faint little stars despite the moon glow and that makes me think of that early morning at 2 a.m. on May 24, 1861. The artist did not just draw soldiers, he drew a believable night where light shapes everything, from the telegraph poles to the water.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This bridge never ends! It goes diagonally all the way to the back and it is packed with little soldiers carrying backpacks and rifles with pointy tips on their shoulders. Some men on horses hold their swords up high as if saying follow me! It is nighttime, there is a big huge moon and fluffy clouds and the water sparkles. There are two little wooden houses in the middle of the bridge and lots of little cross-shaped sticks that are telegraph poles. It looks like everyone is walking quietly under the moon.
