Black-and-white vertical wood engraving depicting six Victorian tourists perched on the rocky summit of Mount Washington. In the immediate foreground a mustached man reclines on the rocks, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, loose shirt, rolled trousers and tall boots, holding a long walking stick and a pipe in a casual, almost sprawling pose. Behind him to the left, a younger man in a straw boater, dark jacket, tie and light trousers sits with legs outstretched, holding a thin cane. To the right, two young women with elaborate hairstyles and small flower-trimmed hats, dressed in ruffled and lace-trimmed dresses, share a pair of opera glasses and gaze intently to the left. Standing at center, an elegant woman in profile wears a long bustled dress with a bow at the waist and binoculars at her side; her figure is silhouetted against a cloudy sky. Further back, another woman wrapped in a plaid shawl braces against the wind. In the distance a vast valley unfolds under dramatic clouds with streaks of rain falling, and to the left the roof of the Tip-Top House is visible with two tiny figures. The light is diffuse, the linework dense with cross-hatching that models fabrics, stone and clouds. The artist's initials WH appear at lower right, with the printed title caption below the image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the reclining man in the foreground and move diagonally up to the two women sharing binoculars and the standing figure silhouetted against the sky. Notice how wind, suggested in fluttering veils and shawls, links the figures to the landscape. Look to the distant rain shower and the tiny Tip-Top House roof to grasp the vast scale of the mountain compared to its fashionable visitors.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mount Washington is known for extreme and rapidly changing weather, and by 1870 its summit already featured the Tip-Top House hotel, built in 1853, and the Mount Washington Cog Railway, opened in 1868 to carry tourists to the top, which explains why elegantly dressed visitors appear in such a rugged setting.

I focus on the technique of this 1870 wood engraving: black and white, vertical format and a dense, textured linework that builds volume in fabrics, rocks and clouds with cross-hatching. The light is diffuse and the cloudy sky contrasts with details like ruffled dresses and hats. Below you can read the printed title and on the lower right the initials WH for Winslow Homer. It was made for the illustrated press, meant to be viewed up close to discover every single line.

From this rocky summit of Mount Washington the view is vast, with valleys, clouds and rain falling in the distance under a cloudy, windy sky. I understand why it was known as the coolest spot in New England and a popular nineteenth century tourist destination. I notice the binoculars shared by two young women and the pair hanging from the standing woman's dress, tools for scanning the horizon. To the left, the roof of the Tip-Top House reminds us that even up here there was shelter.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see six people on very high rocks and it looks super windy. A man with a mustache and a wide hat is lying down as if he were in his living room, with his cane and his pipe. Another man in a straw hat sits with his legs stretched out. Two girls with little hats decorated with flowers look through the same binoculars in the same direction. An elegant lady stands in profile in a long dress with a bow in the back. You can even see clouds and rain far away!
