A single page of aged, cream-colored vellum fills the frame, slightly darker and worn at the edges. In the upper center, set inside a tall frame with a rounded top, is the Crucifixion against a deep-blue sky scattered with small gold stars. A pale, elongated Christ hangs from a golden-brown cross; his arms are stretched wide, his head, crowned with a gold halo, bows down, and a white cloth wraps his hips. Above him a small scroll reads “I.N.R.I.”, flanked by two reddish winged figures. Four small angels in white, with gold or pink wings, fly or hover around him holding chalices. At the foot of the cross stand two tall, slender figures on green ground: on the left, the Virgin Mary in a long, deep-blue mantle over a gold dress, hands joined and gaze lowered; on the right, Saint John in a red cloak over blue, holding a small book. Two stylized green trees mark the sides. Below the image, black Gothic script begins “Domine labia mea aperies / et os meum,” beside a large, ornate blue-and-gold initial “D.” Around everything, a geometric red, blue, and gold border encloses a dense tangle of fine black vines, gold ivy leaves, colorful acanthus flourishes in blue, orange, and red, tiny flowers, and a small red strawberry near the left edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with Christ at the center and follow the cross down to the ground; only then move outward to Mary and John. Look next at the tiny angels: noticing their chalices changes the scene from a historical narrative into a meditation on the Eucharist. Finally, let your eyes drift to the border and see how the earthly garden quietly surrounds the sacred image.

ContextContexto

This is a page from a *Book of Hours (Use of Paris)*, made in Paris around 1420 in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. The Cleveland Museum of Art attributes it to the Boucicaut Master, a French artist active about 1410–25 whose name comes from a book of hours made for Jean de Boucicaut (died 1421), marshal of France, who was captured by the English at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Books of hours were private prayer books organized around prayers for different times of day. The source notes this artist's tall, elongated figures with delicate features and his profound influence on Parisian manuscript painting in the early 1400s. The specific patron of this volume is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The angels around the cross are not merely mourning: they hold chalices to catch Christ's blood, a visual link in medieval devotion between the Crucifixion and the wine of the Eucharist.

I focus on the material: cream-colored vellum darkened at the edges, black gothic ink, tempera and gold leaf. I see the intense blue sky dotted with tiny golden stars, the geometric frame in red, blue and gold, and beyond it the tangle of very fine black stems with golden ivy leaves and blue and orange acanthus. The gold of the halo, the cross and the ornate initial D still glows. Every crack and tiny flower asks for care, because this Paris use manuscript from around 1420 is still breathing.

I am drawn to that deep blue sky filled with little golden stars above the Crucifixion. It is not a realistic sunset, it is a sky made for prayer, with the small I.N.R.I. sign between two reddish winged figures. Pale, elongated Christ hangs in the center, and around him four angels with golden or pinkish wings hover holding chalices. Below, on green ground, the Virgin in a deep blue mantle and Saint John in a red mantle look on in silence. It is night and light at once.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic book full of golden little pictures. At the top there are shiny little stars and four tiny angels flying with little cups. Jesus is on the cross with his white cloth and a golden halo. Below are Mary with her blue cloak and John with his red cloak and his little book. I like the small green trees and the big blue D with gold. Around the border there are vines, little flowers and even a tiny red strawberry hiding. I want to find it.

Quiero buscarla.
