What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical engraving in gray and sepia tones on aged paper, surrounded on all four sides by a border of handwritten-looking text. At the center, Christ, bare-chested and wearing only a knotted cloth around his waist, is bound to a low column. His thin body curves gently, his legs cross at the knees, and his bare feet rest on a tiled floor. His head, encircled by a large round halo, drops toward one shoulder; his eyes are half-closed, his long hair and beard fall limply, and his expression is one of exhaustion rather than resistance. On either side stands a tormentor. At left, a balding man in profile, wearing a long buttoned tunic, raises a scourge and bends one knee as he strikes. At right, another man in a short tunic lifts his scourge high above his head, mouth open and gaze turned upward toward Christ. They hold a basket-like object and ropes between them. Behind the figures is a vaulted Gothic interior with slender columns, pointed arches, ribbed ceiling, and small tower-like elements. Fine parallel and cross-hatched lines model skin, drapery, stone, and shadow, giving the flat scene a shallow but clear sense of space.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with Christ's tilted head and large halo in the center, then move outward to the two raised arms that frame him. Notice how quiet his posture is compared with the tormentors' exertion. Finally, read the sheet as an object: follow the inscribed border and the fine engraved lines that model cloth, skin, and stone.
ContextContexto
This print, The Passion: The Flagellation, is dated to about 1450–75 and attributed to the Master of the Banderoles, an anonymous Netherlandish engraver active in the same period, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. His conventional name comes from the inscribed banderoles, or text scrolls, characteristic of his work; here lettering surrounds the image. It belongs to a Passion cycle, the sequence of episodes of Christ's suffering, a common devotional subject in 15th-century Northern Europe. The technique is engraving with traces of hand coloring. The artist's real name is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: although the source records traces of hand coloring, the sheet now reads almost entirely as gray and beige, so the color survives more as a trace than as a visible effect.

I focus on the paper and how the ink has settled. The grayish and sepia tones, close to #c9c2b4 and #8a857d, are not completely flat: there are traces of hand-applied color over the engraving and parallel and crosshatched lines that model the skin, fabrics and stone of the vaulted Gothic interior. I am very interested in the text border that surrounds the four sides, because it is fragile and explains the nickname of the Master of the Banderoles. The tiled floor, the low column and the scourges are preserved with even wear, a sign that it was a devotional image touched and viewed up close.

What I see here is a small, ordered universe. The large circular halo around Christ's head is like a perfect eclipse that centers the whole composition, and the pointed arches, ceiling ribs and slender columns trace lines that converge toward the background. I like to count and measure: there is a low column in the center, two executioners on the sides and a tiled floor that marks a grid. Although the scene is flat, those lines create a sense of brief space, as if the Gothic interior were a miniature celestial vault enclosing the suffering.

Poor thing, he is all alone in the middle and only wears a little white cloth around his waist. He has a big bright circle around his head and looks very tired, with his little eyes half closed. At his sides there are two mean men hitting him; one is bald and lifts his whip and the other opens his mouth as if shouting. I am curious about the little checkered floor where they stand and the building in the back that looks like a castle with pointy arches. Everything is surrounded by little letters that look handwritten, like a frame that tells something.
