What you would seeLo que verías

A folding fan fully opened into a semi-circular shape, centered against a dark gradient background that fades from black at the top to medium gray at the bottom. It is positioned horizontally, with its pivot at the bottom center. The fan consists of about eighteen to twenty slender sticks made of ivory in a pale creamy off-white tone, with subtle yellowish aging. Each stick is covered in extremely fine pierced openwork resembling lace: tiny human figures, pavilions, boats, trees and foliage are carved through the ivory, creating a dense network of solid and empty space. The upper edge of each stick is rounded and scalloped, forming a wavy outer contour. Two thin pale pink ribbons run horizontally across the leaf, holding the sticks together. In the foreground, the two outer guards are thicker and more heavily carved in relief with textured floral patterns; one shows a small metal eyelet at the pivot. Soft, even lighting emphasizes the translucency of the thin ivory and casts faint shadows beneath the fan. Despite its solid material, the overall effect is airy and delicate, like frozen lace.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the overall lace-like silhouette, then focus on a single stick to find the tiny narrative scenes hidden in the openwork. Notice how light passes through the piercings and how the two pink ribbons visually organize the intricate carving.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this is an ivory fan by an unknown maker, attributed to China during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), in the Chinese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Henry W. Kent. No further description is provided, so its exact place of manufacture, precise date within the Qing range, and history of ownership or use are not known. Finely pierced ivory fans were luxury objects highly prized in China and also made for export, celebrated for their extraordinarily labor-intensive carving.

Curious detailDato curioso

On some Qing openwork fans, craftspeople carved dozens of distinct figures and complete landscapes onto a single stick only a few millimeters wide, a feat that could take weeks of work.

I stop before this fan and think of hours and hours of tiny work. I see about eighteen to twenty rods of pale cream ivory, almost whitish, with a soft yellowing from age. Each one is pierced like lace, with little people, small buildings and trees cut through to let air pass. Two pale pink ribbons hold it together and below the thicker outer guards stand out with plant relief and the rivet with its small eyelet. It is lightness achieved from a solid material.

This fan reminds me of looking at the sky through a stencil. The creamy ivory leaves voids like constellations between the rods, and the openwork forms tiny scenes you only notice if you look carefully, just like focusing a telescope. The two pink ribbons are like orbits holding the pieces together in a perfect semicircle. Below the rivet works as an axis, like the center around which everything turns and opens to display its carved universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like magic! This fan is like lace that does not break even though it is made of light cream ivory. It has many little sticks with tiny cutout drawings of people and trees, and if you blow air passes right through. Two little pink ribbons hug it so it stays together and below it has its small rivet with a metal eyelet. When you open it makes a big semicircle and when you close it becomes very slim. I imagine fanning myself with it on a hot day.

¡Parece magia!
