A circular jade censer photographed in three-quarter view against a dark background fading to gray. The stone displays mottled veining in deep greens, grayish green and whitish accents, with a soft polish and slight translucency at the rim. The vessel has a broad, low body resting on a short ring foot decorated with scrollwork. Around the exterior, a continuous band of archaistic relief covers the belly: stylized taotie masks, T-fret borders and curling spirals, motifs borrowed from ancient Chinese bronzes and reinterpreted in jade. The rim is thick and slightly flared, with a smooth lip. On opposite sides, two zoomorphic handles in high relief project from the shoulder; they resemble phoenix or dragon heads with hooked beaks, round eyes and detailed crests, each holding in its beak a loose, movable ring that hangs freely. Side lighting emphasizes the volume of the carving, the deep shadow of the dark interior, and the contrast between polished surfaces and intricately carved areas. The scale suggests an object meant to be held with both hands, solid and refined in presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the overall silhouette and mottled color of the jade, then focus on the handles with their movable rings. Follow the continuous relief frieze to see how light creates depth in each archaistic motif. Finally notice the contrast between the smooth, dark interior and the densely carved exterior.

ContextContexto

This is a koro, the Japanese term for an incense burner, identified by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a Chinese work from the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), dating to the Qianlong reign (1736–1795), carved in jade. The maker is unknown, as is common for courtly jade production of the period. Jade carving flourished under the Qianlong emperor, with a taste for archaism that revived the forms and decoration of ancient ritual bronzes. This piece combines that historical reference with virtuoso hardstone carving. It is part of the Chinese Art collection, bequest of John L. Severance.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Qing archaistic jade, the rings hanging from the handles were often carved from the same block of stone without assembly, showing the lapidary's technical mastery.

This koro makes me focus on the jade working. I see a wide, low bowl of mottled stone in deep greens with whitish touches, with a soft polish that lets a little light through at the rim. The belly is covered by a band of archaistic reliefs with taotie masks, fret patterns and spirals that copy ancient bronzes. I am interested in the two zoomorphic handles with hooked beaks and the loose hanging ring, because they show highly controlled hardstone carving without losing the solid presence of the vessel.

I look at this incense burner and think of landscapes seen from afar. The mottled jade looks like a planetary surface in grayish greens and whites, photographed against a dark background fading to gray like a night sky. The wide, low body recalls a crater, and the band of reliefs with spirals and frets suggests orbits and ancient maps. The two bird-headed handles with the movable hanging ring make me imagine satellites in suspension, delicately held over an object meant to be held with both hands and contemplated.

This little jade bowl looks like a dragon treasure. It is green with lighter and darker speckles and has a soft shine. It has funny little drawings all around like faces with big eyes and zigzag lines. The most fun part is the two little heads on the sides with curved beaks biting a little ring that really moves. I imagine if you touch it it goes clang clang. It looks small but heavy and you would hold it with both hands like it is magical.
