What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, slender porcelain vase stands centered against a gradient background fading from black to light gray. Its form is elongated and ovoid, with soft shoulders, a short neck and a flared rim edged in gold. The glossy white surface is covered in overglaze enamel painting. The main zone shows a naturalistic garden scene: two small brown quails on pale ground beside craggy, perforated garden rocks rendered in muted blue-gray and green, surrounded by blooming chrysanthemums and peonies in soft pink, magenta and creamy white, with tiny green leaves and thin, twisting branches. Near the foot and neck are layered ornamental bands: a lower border of coral lappets with yellow cartouches, a middle band of pink cloud-like pendants, and an upper neck frieze of green, pink and yellow geometric diaper patterns on white, topped by a yellow scroll band. Even lighting highlights the reflective glaze, the delicate brushwork of layered petals, and the textured, pitted surface of the scholar's rocks.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center and trace the flowering branches down to the pair of quails at the base. Then move up to the neck to see how the geometric borders frame the soft floral scene. Notice how the smooth white ground makes the pink and green enamels stand out.

ContextContexto

This is a porcelain vase with famille rose overglaze enamel decoration, attributed to China, Qing dynasty (1644–1911), Qianlong reign (1736–1795). The maker is unknown, as is typical for imperial kiln production at Jingdezhen during this period. Famille rose, noted for its opaque pinks and broad palette made possible by colloidal gold, reached technical maturity under Qianlong. No further details are given in the source record, but the shape and lavish decoration are consistent with a luxury object for court use. It is housed in the Chinese Art collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, bequest of John L. Severance.

Curious detailDato curioso

The famille rose palette is named for its distinctive opaque pink made from gold, an eighteenth-century innovation that allowed the soft shading and almost painterly petals seen on this vase.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look closely you will see why this vase excites me. It is Jingdezhen porcelain with overglaze famille rose enamels from the Qianlong reign. I focus on the even gloss of the white glaze and the delicate brushwork: petals in pale pink and magenta, tiny green leaves and porous rocks in bluish gray. The gilded rim and the bands with lappets and geometric borders show very controlled imperial workshop craft. I do not touch, I just watch how even light reveals each stroke.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this vase feels like a night sky. The background fading from black to light gray makes the white porcelain stand out like a moon. Its slender silhouette, with an elongated ovoid body and flared mouth, points upward. Down below, the base with coral and yellow lappets and the border with green and pink motifs look like orderly constellations. And at the center, like low stars, the flowers and rocks form a miniature landscape that invites calm contemplation.

Look what a pretty tall shiny vase! It looks like it has a painted garden. I see two tiny brownish quails standing on bumpy bluish gray rocks. Around them there are pink and cream flowers that look like chrysanthemums and peonies with little green leaves. Near the top and bottom it has colorful belts with fun shapes in coral, yellow and green. I want to count the flowers and imagine the quails walking right off.
