What you would seeLo que verías
A wide, elevated view of a sunlit Roman square unfolds across aged, cream-colored paper marked by folds, stains, and softly uneven edges. At upper center, handwritten Italian identifies the prospect of the Trevi Fountain, yet the fountain itself sits modestly at lower right: a low, oval basin with a curved rim, scattered stones, shallow water rendered in pale grey wash, and tiny steps. To the left rises a richly articulated church facade with columns, statues, and a broad stair, while rows of houses with tiled roofs, shutters, chimneys, and small awnings enclose the piazza. In the distance, a large palace crowns the hill beneath a washed, nearly blank sky. Brown ink defines roof tiles, cobblestones, window frames, and architectural ornament; grey wash gives gentle shadow and depth. Small figures stroll, converse, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or stand near the water. In the immediate foreground, patterned paving, a small lantern-like pillar, and a lattice terrace at lower left—where one man leans and another appears below—create a surprising intimate frame. Letters scattered across buildings and a Latin caption along the bottom turn the scene into a labeled map as much as a picture.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the wide, almost empty square and the modest basin on the right; that is the fountain named in the title. Then compare it with the church, palaces, and hilltop buildings competing for attention around it. Look closely at the lower left, where tiny figures on a lattice-covered terrace bring the viewpoint down to human scale.
ContextContexto
This drawing is "Eighteen Views of Rome: The Trevi Fountain," made in 1665 by Flemish artist Lievin Cruyl (c. 1640-c. 1720), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is executed in pen and brown ink with brush and grey wash over graphite, with framing lines in brown ink. The sheet belongs to a series of Roman views and includes handwritten identifications keyed to letters in the image. Crucially, it shows the Trevi area before the famous monumental fountain built in the eighteenth century, so the site probably looked far more ordinary than modern visitors expect.

Curious detailDato curioso
The celebrated Baroque Trevi Fountain familiar today was not completed until 1762, almost a century after this 1665 drawing, which explains the low, plain basin shown here.

I pause on the aged cream paper, with its folds, stains and irregular edges that reveal its age since 1665. I observe the brown ink defining roof tiles, windows and cobblestones, and the gray wash suggesting water and soft shadows. As a restorer I am fascinated that the famous Trevi Fountain here is just a low oval basin on the right, discreet, with scattered stones. I see the work done with pen and brush over graphite, with framing lines in brown ink. The handwritten inscriptions and the Latin legend show me a document that aimed to map, not to embellish.

I look at this Roman square as if it were a clear sky for observation. The light is bright and even, almost cloudless, perfect for distinguishing distant details like the large palace on the hill in the background. I am surprised that the fountain that now draws crowds is here a small oval at the lower right, almost lost among tiled houses and the church on the left with its staircase. The letters spread over the buildings work like constellations identifying each spot. It is a serene topographic view, an inhabited map where carriages and tiny figures mark the human scale beneath a washed sky.

Hi! I see a huge square drawn on old cookie-colored paper. At the top it says something in Italian but I do not understand it. I looked for the fountain and I can barely see it, it is a tiny oval little pool on the right with little stones around it. What I like most is that there are little houses with orange roofs, a big church with stairs and a carriage with little horses. There are tiny people walking and chatting. At the bottom left there is a little terrace with a lattice where a man is peeking out. It looks like he is playing hide and seek! Everything looks calm and sunny.
¡Hola!

It is not the Latin legend at the bottom, but the title at the top announcing the view
