What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching in horizontal format shows a large three-masted whaling ship dominating the right foreground, seen from the starboard quarter with its stern angled toward the viewer. Its hull is rendered with dense cross-hatching to suggest wood planking and shadow, with furled sails, intricate rigging and nets, and striped flags fluttering from each mast and the bowsprit. Tiny figures of sailors crowd the deck and climb ladders along the side, giving a sense of scale. The vessel rides a choppy sea built from swirling, dark engraved lines that create foam and rolling waves. In the middle and background to the left, smaller rowboats are towed, a whale’s back breaks the surface with a spout, and another sail appears on the horizon. Steep icy cliffs and bergs rise on the far left, sketched with granular textures and soft shading. The sky is filled with billowing, heavily hatched clouds leaving bright openings of light. Along the bottom margin on aged, off-white paper, an inscription reads De Swarte Beer een Groenlants Vaerder, with the number 7 at lower right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large whaler on the right, following its flags and rigging down to the bustling deck. Then let your eye drift left across the rough waves to the distant whaling boats, the whale’s spout, and the icy cliffs, which reframe the ship as part of a hunting expedition.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to the series Verscheÿde Schepen en Gesichten van Amstelredam, Part II, etched between 1652 and 1654 and published by Clement de Jonghe after designs by Reinier Nooms, called Zeeman, a Dutch sailor and artist active c. 1623–1664. The series records contemporary Dutch vessel types during the seventeenth-century maritime expansion of the Netherlands. Made by etching, this plate depicts De Swarte Beer, a Greenland whaler used for Arctic whaling voyages, a major industry of the period. It is held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams Collection. No further specific history of this ship is recorded in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Reinier Nooms signed as Zeeman, meaning sailor in Dutch, and his firsthand seafaring experience gave his prints an unusual nautical accuracy admired by shipbuilders and historians.

I pause to see how the etching holds time on the yellowish paper. I notice the dense hatching of the clouds, the finely woven rigging and the cross-shading of the choppy sea that creates foam without any color. The letterpress inscription De Swarte Beer een Groenlants Vaerder on the lower margin moves me, with that discreet number 7 beside it. Every curved stroke and every tiny pennant reveals the pressure of the plate and the bite of the acid.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this seventeenth century Dutch sky I think about observation. The printmaker filled the air with cottony grey clouds and luminous clearings that look like weather studies. I am fascinated that the icy landscape of cliffs and ice blocks appears in the background, like an Arctic horizon sailors used to orient themselves. The striped flags fluttering on the three masts remind me how wind, visible only through its effects, was a navigation tool.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This ship is huge and parked on waves full of scribbly lines! I like hunting for the tiny sailors on deck, some hanging from little ladders as if they were playing at climbing. I see three super tall masts with striped little flags flying and ropes everywhere. Far away there are big ice chunks, another tiny ship in the mist and even the back of a whale blowing a spout of water. The sky is all cloudy and looks like it is about to rain.
