Khusrau Parviz, a Sasanian king who reigned from 590 to 628, and Shirin, an Armenian princess, meet outdoors at night. According to the source, the figs and pomegranates she offers symbolize fertility. The other side carries Persian verses from Jami's Haft Awrang. The artist is unknown.

What captivates me most is that deep blue sky dotted with silver stars. It is not just a decorative background, it is a true night scene: the lovers Jusrau and Shirin meet outdoors, at night, under a starry firmament. Above the pale lilac hills and dark green cypresses, the stars mark the hour of romance. I imagine how that sky looked in Persia in the sixteenth century, with no artificial light, and how the painter used silver to make it shine. For me, the sky is the third protagonist.

I love searching for little things in this painting! I see a white tent with little blue flowers that looks like a fancy camping tent. Outside there are two people looking at each other and one in orange clothes offers a little plate with red fruits that are figs and pomegranates. There are servants in colorful clothes and a man in yellow playing a long instrument called tanbur. Down below there is green grass with tiny flowers and a black horse peeking its face in. And above, a blue sky full of little stars!
