What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a smooth matte black background, a large ceramic jar dominates the view with its full, rounded form. The lower body swells into a broad, bulbous belly that tapers to a short ring foot, then rises to pronounced, sloping shoulders and a short, cylindrical neck ending in a slightly flared, uneven and chipped mouth. The entire surface is coated in a glossy lead glaze in layered greens, from deep forest and emerald to yellowish olive and moss, with vertical runs and streaks most evident on the neck where the glaze pooled and flowed during firing. Light catches the vitreous surface, creating wet-looking highlights and dark, shadowed valleys. Encircling the shoulder is a wide raised band of molded and impressed relief showing intertwined mythical creatures, likely dragons or composite beasts amid scrolls and clouds, rendered with crisp, bumpy texture that stands out from the smoother glaze below. Two thin incised horizontal lines ring the neck. The glaze shows age through fine crazing, small flakes and worn patches exposing the pale buff earthenware beneath, notably on the mouth rim, a pinkish chip on the neck and around the foot. The vessel feels heavy, ancient and luminously glazed.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Take in the whole swelling silhouette first, then move to the decorated shoulder band and trace the creatures in relief. Notice how the glaze varies from translucent streaks to opaque pools, and how light and wear reveal the history of firing and age.

ContextContexto

This large jar is from China, Han dynasty, dated 206 BCE to 220 CE, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is made of earthenware with impressed and molded decoration and a copper-green lead glaze typical of the period. In Han times, such green-glazed vessels were often made as mingqi, funerary objects placed in tombs to serve the deceased in the afterlife and signal social status. The work is housed in the Chinese Art department and was purchased through the J. H. Wade Fund. Its maker is unknown, which is common for workshop ceramics of this era. No further specific provenance is given, but the form and technique are well documented for Han funerary ceramics.

Curious detailDato curioso

Han potters developed a low-fired lead glaze colored with copper to achieve this vivid green, a technical achievement that allowed bright, flowing glazes and foreshadowed the later multicolor sancai wares of the Tang dynasty.

I focus on that uneven green, from bright emerald to yellowish olive with vertical runs on the neck. I notice the fine crackle, the chips on the mouth and that small pinkish spot where the glaze is lost and the pale clay shows through. I am drawn to the raised band on the shoulder, rough with intertwined beasts, and the two incised lines on the neck. Everything speaks of earthenware with lead glaze and wear consistent with great age.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Against that smooth black background the jar looks like a solitary planet in the void. Its globular, full body reflects light like a glassy ocean, with wet highlights and deep shadows shifting from dark moss green to bright green. The short cylindrical neck is like a crater opening upward, with a worn rim. The relief band reminds me of constellations in motion, creatures and clouds circling an equator.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant shiny belly! I like that it is green all over but with lighter and darker spots, as if paint had dripped down it. On top it has a belt with curvy little animals, I think they are dragons playing among clouds. Its little mouth is a bit chipped and you can see the light color inside. It is tall, pot-bellied and very shiny, as if it were wet and super heavy.
