What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a black, finely woven fabric background with a tight vertical grain stands a small gold ornament, photographed frontally and in vertical format. The upper part is a bird seen from the front, its body elongated and symmetrical. Its head is raised at the top, ending in a pointed, upward-facing beak; the face is barely modeled, with small relief bumps suggesting features, and a bright highlight falls across it. The body narrows like a waist at the middle and widens again toward the base. Incised diagonal lines cover the folded wings, forming repeated V shapes like a herringbone pattern; the lines cross near the center and continue toward a flared tail shaped like a small fan with slightly irregular edges. The gold surface is warm and uneven, with granular textures, tiny pits, soft scratches, and duller areas between the reliefs. Below the tail hangs a thin vertical ring that passes through a round hole in a flat plaque. That plaque, wider than the bird, is shaped like a rounded diamond or an inverted heart with its point facing down. It is much plainer, though it has a few small raised bubbles and specks. Frontal lighting creates strong glints on the head and edges, while the dark background isolates the piece and emphasizes its silhouette.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the bird's raised head, then follow the diagonal lines of its wings down to where they cross. Look next at the small ring: it is the joint that sets the lower plaque in motion. That contrast between the modeled upper body and the almost plain dangle changes the piece from a static figure into a wearable, moving ornament.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a bird pendant in the Muisca style from Colombia, dated circa 900–1550, made of cast gold by an unknown maker. Muisca metalwork is divided by the museum into ornaments meant to be worn and figurines made as offerings; this piece belongs to the first group. Its herringbone moldings, openwork, and wing details were formed in the wax model before casting, while the dangle was attached afterward. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Exactly who wore it, where it was found, and which bird species it represents are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The lower plaque was not cast together with the bird: it was attached afterward with a ring, so it probably swayed and caught the light when the ornament was worn.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the movement and glint of the hanging plaque have communicated when someone wore this bird?¿Qué podría comunicar el movimiento y el destello de la placa colgante cuando alguien llevaba puesto este pájaro?
  2. Is this a portrait of a specific bird, a protective symbol, or mainly a display of the goldworker's skill?¿Es el retrato de un ave concreta, un símbolo protector o, sobre todo, una muestra de la habilidad del orfebre?
  3. How does our reading of the piece change when we see it enlarged in a photograph instead of at its real scale on a body?¿Cómo cambia nuestra lectura al verla ampliada en una fotografía en vez de a su escala real sobre un cuerpo?

What holds my attention is the surface. I see warm gold with an uneven texture: tiny grains, little pits and soft scratches that tell how the piece was made. The herringbone pattern on the folded wings and the openwork were already in the wax model before casting, and that shows in the edges. The lower plaque is smoother, though it still keeps tiny bubbles in relief, and the small ring linking both parts was added later. The frontal light highlights bright spots and leaves more opaque areas between the ridges.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this bird is like a constellation cut out against the night. The fine-grained black background works like a starless sky that isolates the figure and makes the gold shine intensely. At the top the pointed beak aims upward, as if seeking the zenith, and the bright glints on the head and edges look like reflections of a frontal sun. The symmetrical body, with a narrow waist and a fan-shaped tail, reminds me of a star chart: orderly, tiny and solemn, made to be observed up close.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super tiny shiny gold bird. It has a little head with a sharp beak pointing up and wings with tiny v-shaped lines like drawn feathers. In the middle it gets skinny and at the bottom its tail opens like a little fan. The funniest part is that a little plaque shaped like an upside-down heart hangs from a small ring and can swing. It sits on a black cloth and shines so much it seems like it just turned its light on.
