What you would seeLo que verías

A small gold object stands vertically at the center of the image against a matte black background with a fine woven texture, like fabric made of tight vertical ribs. The piece occupies only the middle strip of the frame and is surrounded by a wide margin of darkness that makes it look suspended and isolated. At the top is the bird's head, raised and slightly tilted, with a smooth, rounded surface, a pointed profile, and barely suggested facial features worn by time. Below it, the body widens at the chest, narrows sharply at the waist like an hourglass, and opens again toward the bottom. Parallel incised lines run diagonally across the chest and lower body, forming a chevron or herringbone pattern that suggests folded wings and feathers. The gold is pale and muted rather than mirror-bright, with darker grooves, small pits, roughness, and irregular edges, especially near the upper left side. At the lower end, a thin metal ring passes through the body and holds a flat dangling plaque, broader and shaped like a rounded heart or fan, with a hammered surface, soft contours, and three tiny raised dots near its right edge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny ring at the center: it separates the bird made in one casting from the plaque hung afterward. Then move up along the chevrons of the body until you reach the smooth, tilted head. Finally, notice the contrast between that carefully patterned bird and the almost plain, slightly uneven plaque.

ContextContexto

Catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art as Bird Bead, this work is attributed to an unknown maker, dated to circa 900–1550, and associated with Colombia in the Muisca style. It is made of cast gold and classified as jewelry in the Art of the Americas department. According to the museum, Muisca metalwork can be divided into ornaments meant to be worn and figurines made as offerings; this piece belongs to the first group. The source highlights its herringbone moldings, openwork, and wing details, all formed in the wax model before casting. Who wore it, where exactly it was found, and what bird it represents are not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso

The dangling plaque was not cast together with the bird: according to the museum, these hanging elements were attached after the main piece came out of the mold.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What movements and sounds might this pendant have made when worn on a moving body?¿Qué movimientos y sonidos podría haber hecho este colgante al llevarlo puesto sobre un cuerpo en movimiento?
  2. Why render a bird with such geometric, patterned wings instead of in a more naturalistic way?¿Por qué representar a un ave con las alas tan geométricas y dibujadas, en vez de buscar un aspecto más natural?
  3. How does the meaning of the piece change if we imagine it sewn to clothing, hung from a cord, or kept as an offering?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de la pieza si la imaginamos cosida a una prenda, colgada de un cordón o guardada como ofrenda?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this tiny bird was made. It is cast gold, and what you see on its chest was not engraved afterwards: that V-shaped or herringbone pattern, the diagonal lines suggesting folded wings, was already in the wax model before pouring the metal. The gold looks pale and dull, with tiny pits, darker grooves and irregular edges from wear. Below, a thin ring holds a hanging plate shaped like a heart or fan, hammered and with three little dots in relief near the edge.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at it I feel it is a portable constellation. A little golden bird suspended in a matte black sky, like fabric with vertical ribs, isolated in the center of night. Its smooth, tilted head points upward, as if seeking flight. The hourglass-shaped body seems compressed by gravity and then opens again. That hanging plate below could be a moon or a fan of stars. It is Muisca jewelry, made to be worn on the body, not to be buried as an offering.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little gold birdie that wants to fly! It has a round and smooth little head, a bit crooked, and its tummy with diagonal little lines like folded wings. It sits in the middle of a black background that looks like fabric and it looks lonely and shiny but not too shiny, like old gold with little scratches. Hanging below is a little heart-shaped plate with three tiny dots. I imagine if you shake it it goes ting ting because it hangs from a little ring.
