What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a black background of finely and regularly woven fabric, a small golden piece hangs vertically. The dark ground fills almost the entire frame and, by contrast, brings out the warm, somewhat matte glow of the metal. At the top is a bird seen from the front, its body compact and stylized. Its head, tilted slightly downward, projects at the center; a short beak can be made out, along with two tiny dark holes suggesting eyes or nostrils. On either side of the head are two irregular black perforations passing through the piece. The chest and wings are marked with incised V-shaped lines, a herringbone-like pattern imitating plumage. The body narrows at the waist and widens again into a short, flat tail with faint vertical striations. From that tail, suspended by a small thin ring, hangs a flat plate in the shape of a rounded diamond, wider than it is tall, with a pronounced lower point. The plate is mostly smooth but worn, with stains, slightly irregular edges, and a rough patch at its right end. Soft frontal light casts minimal shadow and reveals the grainy texture of the cast gold. Its true scale cannot be determined from the photograph, but the ring and fine details suggest a small jewel meant to be worn close to the body.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the bird's face and follow the V-shaped lines down its chest, as if reading its plumage. Then notice the small ring at its tail: it changes the piece from a static figure into something made to move. Finally, look at the flat plate; its relative plainness makes the sculpted bird seem even more alive.
ContextContexto
Titled Bird Bead, this piece is attributed to an unknown maker, dated to circa 900-1550, and described by the Cleveland Museum of Art as Colombia, Muisca style. It is cast gold, classified as jewelry, and held in the Art of the Americas department; the credit line names the Gift of Mrs. Edward S. Harkness in memory of Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness. The museum notes that Muisca metalwork includes ornaments to be worn and offering figurines, and places this work among the ornaments. It describes an elaborate bird pendant with herringbone moldings, openwork, and wing details modeled in wax before casting, with dangles attached afterward. Its exact original owner and place of use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
The flat dangling plate was not cast together with the bird: according to the museum, the dangles were attached after casting, joined by the small ring visible at the tail.

I focus on how this small golden bird hanging against the black textile was made. I see cast gold with its warm, matte glow, marked by time with spots and worn edges. I notice the V-shaped lines forming the herringbone plumage and the openwork near the head, all modeled in wax before casting. Below, the diamond-shaped plaque hangs from a thin loop and already shows wear. It is jewelry meant to be worn close to the body, intimate and fragile.

When I look at this golden bird I think about the sky seen by those who made it. It is a stylized bird, with a herringbone pattern on its chest and a short tail from which a plaque hangs like a small flat sun. Its golden color recalls sunlight against a dark background, like this black textile that looks like night. I imagine that shine moving with the person who wore it. I do not know what bird it is or what it meant, but I understand why they would choose a bird for a jewel that looks upward.

It looks like a little golden bird hanging like a charm. It is in the middle of a black cloth and it shines a lot. It has its little head tilted down, two tiny holes on the sides and little V-shaped lines on its chest that look like feathers. Its tail is tiny and from there hangs a little diamond-shaped plaque that swings. I imagine it jingles when you walk. It is small, to wear around your neck, and I like that it looks like it is about to fly even though it is still.
