Les Vieilles Histoires: a man, a bear, and the cover of a songbookLes Vieilles Histoires: un hombre, un oso y la portada de un cancionero
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901) · 1893 · France, 19th century
lithograph
What you would seeLo que verías
The composition is horizontal and very open, drawn in soft grey-green lines over a pale cream sheet with broad, almost empty margins. In the foreground on the left, a large bear walks with its body lowered, its head turned down and to the right. Its fur is suggested by loose, dense shading, with darker patches on its back, ears, and legs. It wears a muzzle or harness around its snout, from which a thin chain runs to the hand of a man standing on the right. The man, seen nearly in profile and from behind at three-quarter view, wears a light overcoat, trousers, shoes, and a tall dark top hat; his posture is calm, almost indifferent, as if this were an ordinary stroll. Behind them, the background is barely sketched: a promenade or riverbank slopes diagonally, with lampposts, thin trees, a bridge with arches, distant buildings, and a small balloon floating in the upper left. Another tiny figure walks away in the distance. Printed text occupies the upper right and lower corners, giving the sheet's title, credits, publisher, and price. The overall effect is light, sketch-like, and spacious, as if the scene had been captured in a few quick strokes.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the disproportion between the bear and the man, and with the thin chain that links them. Then move to the background and notice how little is needed to suggest a city. Finally, read the texts as part of the image: this is not only a scene, it is also a cover announcing a book.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this work as 'Les Vieilles histoires: Couverture - Frontispiece', a lithograph made in 1893 by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The text printed on the sheet explains its function: it is the cover for 'Les Vieilles Histoires', poems by Jean Goudezki set to music by Désiré Dihau and published in Paris by G. Ondet. Toulouse-Lautrec produced numerous lithographs and posters in late nineteenth-century Paris. The source gives no description of the publication's contents, so the precise relationship between the man with the bear and the poems is not known from these data; it is probably an image designed to announce and sell the series.

Curious detailDato curioso
At the lower left one can make out Toulouse-Lautrec's small circular monogram, a discreet signature integrated into the margin of a work made for reproduction and sale.

- Why entrust the cover to a man walking a bear rather than to a scene directly illustrating a poem?¿Por qué confiar la portada a un hombre que pasea un oso y no a una escena que ilustre directamente un poema?

I focus on how this 1893 cover was printed. It is a lithograph on light cream paper, with soft gray-green strokes and wide empty margins. The bear in the foreground on the left has loose shading that suggests darker fur on its back and legs, and it wears a muzzle with a thin chain attached. The printed text at the top right confirms its publishing function without crowding the light, sketch-like drawing.

I always look for what floats and what gives light. Here I see, at the top left, a small hot air balloon hovering over the diagonal promenade. Below, the walk is marked by slender streetlamps, an arched bridge in the background and tiny distant figures. Everything is barely sketched, as if the artist captured a fleeting moment of an urban stroll in Paris at dusk, with that calm contrast between the man in the top hat and the bear.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
There is a giant bear walking like a little dog! It is on the left with its head turned and it wears a muzzle with a little chain held by a man with a tall black hat. The man walks very calmly, as if nothing is strange. In the back you can see a bridge, skinny little trees and a tiny balloon up high. Everything is drawn with soft little strokes and there is a lot of empty space, but I like to imagine they are going to the park together.

I am round and I float at the top left, very tiny in the background. What am I?
