What you would seeLo que verías

This is a circular black-and-white engraving on cream-colored paper, densely filled with figures, animals, foliage, and architectural details, with almost no empty space inside the circle. At the center sits a bearded, long-haired man with a radiating halo, seen frontally, wearing loose, heavily folded robes with small dark dots. In one hand he holds a book, and beside his feet, reclining on the ground among small animals, lies the lamb associated with John the Baptist. Behind him rises a rocky desert landscape with cliffs, a slender tree, and a distant walled town. Surrounding this central scene, woven into a thick border of curling vines, leaves, flowers, and small birds, are eight figures. At the top is a winged eagle, at the left a winged ox, at the right a winged lion, and at the bottom a winged angel, each within a roundel with a banderole. In the four corners sit haloed, robed men in small interior studies, writing or reading at desks near windows and bookshelves. The fine engraved lines create shading through dense hatching, especially in the robes, wings, and rock faces. The overall impression is intricate, meditative, and minutely detailed.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the center, with John the Baptist and the lamb beside him, then move clockwise following the vine border. Notice how each surrounding figure is enclosed within its own small architectural space or roundel, yet connected to the whole by the same foliage. That tension between separation and unity changes the reading: it is not a single scene, but a network of authorities around a central witness.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a 1466 engraving by Master ES, a German printmaker active between 1450 and 1467, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and credited to the John L. Severance Fund. At the center is Saint John the Baptist; around him are the symbols of the four Evangelists — the eagle, ox, lion, and angel — and the four Fathers of the Latin Church, shown as scholars in their studies. Master ES is an anonymous artist known only by those initials. The source does not identify which corner belongs to each Church Father, so that specific assignment is not stated here.

I pause on the cream colored paper and how the black ink sits in extremely fine lines. Look closely at the folds in the central bearded man’s robe: they are shaded with tiny dots and crosshatching that create volume without any color. The border of twisting vines, leaves and little birds is a work of patience, leaving almost no empty space. I notice the even wear of this circular 1466 engraving and think about the care needed to preserve those scrolls and the wings of the eagle, the ox, the lion and the angel without fading.

To me this circle feels like a small ordered cosmos. At the center, beneath a halo of rays, sits the bearded man with his book and the lamb at his feet, like a still sun. Around him orbit eight presences: the eagle at the top, the ox and the lion at the sides, the angel at the bottom, and in the four corners the haloed sages in their studies. Everything is held by a ring of intertwined foliage, like a vegetal orbit that keeps together the rocky landscape, the slender tree and the distant walled city.

This drawing is a circle full of hidden treasures! In the middle there is a man with a beard and a light around his head, with a little lamb lying at his feet. If you look at the border it looks like a jungle of curly little plants with tiny flowers and little birds. At the top there is a winged eagle, and there is also a winged lion, a little winged ox and an angel. In the little corners there are four grandpas with light around their heads writing at their desks. I love searching for all the tiny animals.
