What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a single lined notebook page, photographed frontally against a dark gray background. The paper is a yellowed cream color, aged, with pale blue horizontal rules and a vertical margin on the left. At the top, in dark blue ink and flowing cursive handwriting, it reads: october 17. 1905, Tuesday afternoon, moved into my new lodgings, Mrs Mead 65th Pickney ct, a nice Room. sunny. The script slants to the right, with uneven ink density and some words more heavily inked than others. The remainder of the page is blank, showing only the blue lines. Near the lower center there is a small brownish stain from moisture or foxing. The paper edges are slightly worn and wavy, with the upper right corner folded and darkened. On the left, the binding and a sliver of the adjacent page are visible. In the lower right corner a small printed number 1 can be seen. Even lighting emphasizes the fibrous, slightly rough texture of the paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First read the handwritten note at the top and notice the emptiness it leaves below, as if the blank space inhabits the new room. Then look at the small stain in the center and the worn paper edges, traces of time that turn a daily note into an intimate object. Linger on the final word sunny, a brief luminous closing against the yellowed paper.
ContextContexto
This is the opening page of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, dated 1905–10 according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The bound volume holds 69 pages of drawings, a diary largely devoted to the artist’s health, and a three-page discourse on the nature of genius and ideas. The visible entry of October 17, 1905 records his move to new lodgings with Mrs. Mead. While the catalog technique is graphite, this particular page is handwritten in ink. No further details about the exact address are provided in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso
Though known today as a Post-Impressionist linked to the Ashcan School, Prendergast’s sketchbooks show a lesser known habit: he regularly kept a diary about his health and philosophical ideas alongside his drawings.

If you look closely, you will see that the cream colored paper is already aged and wavy, with worn edges and the upper right corner folded and darkened, signs of the passage of time. I am interested in the horizontal blue lines, the dark blue ink of the cursive handwriting and that small brown stain in the lower center, perhaps humidity or rust. Everything speaks of an object used and stored for more than a century that we now preserve so it does not deteriorate further.

This page reminds me of how we record an important observation, with date, time and place. Here it says Tuesday afternoon, October 17, 1905, moving into new lodgings with Mrs Mead, a nice sunny room. Like when I note the weather for stargazing, the artist notes that the day was sunny. It is a brief and everyday diary entry that marks the beginning of a 69 page sketchbook that also holds drawings and personal reflections.

It looks like the first page of a secret diary but it is almost empty. There are only a few lines written at the top in pretty slanted handwriting that says someone moved to a new house on a sunny Tuesday. I like to imagine who Mrs Mead was and what that sunny room looked like. At the bottom there is a little brown spot like a drop fell there. And on the left you can see the spine of the notebook, as if someone left it open to keep writing.
