What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open sketchbook photographed against a dark gray background. The main page, numbered '65' in pencil at the upper right, is cream-colored, slightly yellowed with age, with soft shadows along its edges. On the right, the thin edges of the following pages are visible; on the left, part of a torn preceding sheet intrudes, with an irregular, fibrous edge. In the upper-center of the page, a nude woman seen from behind is drawn in loose, rapid graphite lines. Her hair is a dark, densely scribbled bun. Her neck, shoulders, and back are suggested with few curved strokes, some doubled or left open. Her arms hang close to her body and her hands seem to meet behind her, near a bunched garment lowered around her hips and thighs, rendered as a tangle of swirling lines. The buttocks are the most defined and shadowed area, outlined with darker, repeated curves. Below them, the legs narrow into a few sketchy lines that fade before reaching the feet, which are not drawn. More than half of the page below and to the right of the figure is completely empty.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark knot of hair and let your eyes travel down the back to the darkest, most heavily worked lines. Then step back and notice how much of the page is left empty. That contrast between a concentrated body and a large blank makes the pose feel both present and fleeting.

ContextContexto

This graphite drawing by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada, dates to 1905-10. It is page 65 of a bound sketchbook linked to the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts; according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Prendergast wrote the hotel's address inside the cover. The volume contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann. The model's identity, the exact place where this study was made, and whether it was drawn from life are not known. It was likely a quick figure study rather than a finished work.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the reading of the body change when only the most worked area is the buttocks and the rest dissolves into a few lines?¿Cómo cambia la lectura del cuerpo cuando la zona más trabajada son las nalgas y el resto se disuelve en pocas líneas?
  2. What does the hurried gesture of a sketchbook page reveal that a finished painting might hide?¿Qué revela el gesto apresurado de una página de cuaderno que una pintura terminada podría ocultar?
  3. Does the absence of a face, setting, and feet make the figure feel more universal or more anonymous?¿La ausencia de rostro, entorno y pies hace que la figura se sienta más universal o más anónima?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely at this cream-colored paper, you will see it is fragile and already yellowed with age. This is page 65, numbered in pencil at the top right. On the left you can glimpse the torn, fibrous edge of the previous sheet, a sign of wear from handling the sketchbook. With my conservator eye, I notice the loose, rapid graphite: the dark bun is the heaviest mark, the buttocks are the most shaded area, and below there is a lot of empty space. It is a quick study from 1905 to 1910, not a finished work, kept in a volume of 72 drawings and 9 watercolors.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Like a constellation, just a few lines are enough to recognize a shape here. I see the woman from behind in the upper center, drawn with open, light curves, like interrupted orbits. Her silhouette floats over the large cream void of the page, like a figure cut out against a night sky. The legs fade before the feet, unfinished, and the lower right remains completely blank. It reminds me how with minimal marks our brain completes a figure, just as it connects stars to see a constellation.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look, it is a lady with no clothes seen from behind! The artist just made quick little pencil lines. He gave her a dark little bun that is really scribbled and her back with soft lines. She has a wrinkled little garment pulled down around her bottom, made with lots of spiral scribbles. The funny part is her legs get thinner and disappear, he did not draw her feet. Almost the whole lower sheet is empty, as if he got tired or was in a hurry. On the left you can see a little bit of another torn page.
