What you would seeLo que verías
An open sketchbook is shown straight-on against a dark gray background, its two cream-colored pages yellowed with age. The central binding divides the scene, yet the drawing continues across it as if it were a single landscape. On the left page, dense, tangled graphite lines fill most of the upper and middle areas: overlapping curls, zigzags, and loose loops suggest leafy trees and bushes, with no individual leaf fully drawn. Near the bottom, short vertical strokes indicate a fence, and a thicker vertical post stands slightly right of center. In the upper left corner, a tiny, barely sketched rectangular shape may be part of another building. On the right page, in the upper left quadrant, stands a two-story house drawn with straighter lines: a flat roof, a chimney with a small pointed top, a narrow side window, a larger shuttered window above, and a shaded doorway or window below with a small awning. Short horizontal marks suggest siding or brick. Below it, another fence and a few rounded stones or bushes anchor the house. The lower right half of this page is strikingly blank, leaving the pale, slightly speckled paper, its worn edges, and the handwritten number “55” at the top as important parts of the image.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the contrast between the crowded left page and the largely empty right one, then follow the fence as it crosses the gutter and connects both drawings. Notice how a few scribbled lines are enough to suggest leaves, while the house is built from straighter, more measured strokes.
ContextContexto
This is a double-page spread, pages 54 and 55, from a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada, dated 1905–10. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the bound volume contains 72 pages of pencil drawings and 9 watercolors of Cape Ann, and Prendergast wrote the address of the Granite Shore Hotel in Rockport, Massachusetts, inside the cover. It was probably a working travel notebook for observing houses, gardens, and coastal landscapes. We do not know whether this exact house was near the hotel.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this spread is entirely in graphite, the same sketchbook also contains 9 watercolors among its 72 pages of pencil drawings, according to the museum.

I focus on the creamy paper, yellowed with age, mottled and with worn edges. You can feel time in that #E9DCBB tone and in how the graphite sits differently depending on pressure. On the left the marks are dense, tangled, almost nervous; on the right the house is drawn with straighter, more controlled lines. I am drawn to the central gutter: the drawing crosses the fold, but the book remains an object, with the handwritten number 55 at the top. I would not retouch anything, just observe how the empty space on the right also preserves history.

I see this sketch as a map of earthly constellations. On the left, the loops and zigzags are like graphite nebulae filling the paper's sky, without a single leaf fully defined. On the right, the two-story house is the landmark, with its pointed chimney like a lighthouse. I am intrigued by the completely empty lower right half: it is the nocturnal void of the pale paper that lets the drawing breathe. The sketchbook traveled through Cape Ann between 1905 and 1910, hunting landscapes the way one hunts stars.

It looks like someone drew really fast without wanting to lift the pencil. On the left side there are lots of curly scribbles that are trees with very messy hair. On the right side there is a little house with a flat roof, windows with shutters and a pointy little chimney. Down below there is a fence made of little sticks and some round stones. The funniest part is that on the bottom right they drew nothing and left the paper empty with little speckles. The number 55 is at the top like a math homework.
