What you would seeLo que verías

An open sketchbook is photographed head-on against a dark gray ground, its two cream-colored pages slightly yellowed with age. The central binding divides the image, yet the graphite drawing flows across it without stopping. The line is quick, loose, and repeatedly reworked: curves, scribbles, and short passages of shading barely suggest human figures within a landscape. At left, a hat-wearing figure appears in profile, facing toward the middle; nearby stands a smaller figure, also in a hat, wrapped in tangled strokes. On the right-hand page, several standing and seated silhouettes gather together, their round heads, circular hats, and bodies indicated with only a few lines. In the background, at upper right, rooftops, a hill, and a small tower evoke a village. A broad horizontal line runs across the lower portion as ground or path, beneath which zigzagging marks suggest grass, rocks, or shadow. Worn edges, small stains, traces of green, red, and blue near the spine, and the number 99 at the lower right corner are all visible. The overall impression is of an outdoor notation concerned more with movement and grouping than with finished detail.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the horizon and the little tower at upper right, then move down to the clustered figures. Notice how the drawing crosses the center binding as if the notebook were a single field. Finally, look for the hats: their repeated circles are the clue that holds the crowd together.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, these are pages 98 and 99 of Sketchbook, The Dells, No. 127, by Maurice Prendergast (1858–1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada. Dated around 1919–1921, the work is in graphite. The source states that the sketchbook contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and that it came to the museum as the Gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. The figures' exact activity is not known for certain; they probably record an everyday outdoor scene observed by the artist.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite all the visual activity, the only clear mark of order is the tiny number “99” in the lower right corner, which identifies the page within the bound volume.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the creamy yellowed paper and its worn edges, with age spots and traces of green, red and blue near the spine. The graphite crosses the central seam without hesitation, with quick lines and soft shading that barely hold the figures. This sketchbook with 59 pages and 16 watercolors carries the trace of open air in Cape Ann. As a gift from Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast, it reminds us that even a sketch ages and needs care.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see these pages as a constellation map: round heads like moons and circular hats orbiting above a ground line drawn as a horizon. Maurice Prendergast, working around 1919-1921, does not define, he suggests. The tower and rooftops on the hill are distant landmarks, like a town seen through binoculars. The zigzag strokes below feel like shimmering atmosphere around everything. It is an inhabited sky, but drawn in graphite.

Maurice Prendergast, activo hacia 1919-1921, no define, sugiere.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone drew really fast so they would not miss the moment! I see little people with round hats, some standing and some sitting, as if they are chatting on the grass. The long line at the bottom is the little path and the zigzag is tiny grass. In the back there are houses with rooftops and a little tower on the hill. The sketchbook is open to page 99 and looks old but pretty, like a drawing diary made outdoors.
