What you would seeLo que verías
An open sketchbook viewed from above, with two facing pages of pale cream paper showing the central gutter with visible stitching and slightly yellowed, aged edges. Across the paper, quick and loose graphite marks in dark and medium gray, with broken outlines, zigzag hatching and soft shading made with the side of the lead. There is no color, only graphite on the light ground. In the foreground at the bottom, two seated figures appear on what seems to be sand or rocks, rendered with circular and angular scribbles that suggest clothing, wide-brimmed hats and relaxed postures. Toward the middle ground and background, four or five smaller standing figures with rounded heads and barely outlined bodies are scattered in pairs along a horizontal band that implies a beach. The horizon is hinted with long diagonal strokes that may be sea and sky; near the top, more open, airy lines evoke clouds or cliffs. The composition feels airy and fragmented, like a snapshot. Details that reward close looking include tiny gestural marks for feet, variations in pencil pressure between firm contours and smudged shadows, and the faint page number 101 in the lower right corner of the right sheet.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the whole spread as a landscape and let the loose lines assemble into sea and beach. Then focus on the foreground seated figures, where the scribble thickens to reveal hats and poses. Notice how a few diagonal strokes alone separate sky, water and sand and give depth to an almost abstract scene.
ContextContexto
This work is pages 100 and 101 of the sketchbook The Dells, No. 127 by Maurice Prendergast (American, born in Newfoundland, 1858–1924), dated about 1919–1921. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the bound volume contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. This double-page spread, titled Figures on a Beach, is a graphite study in a bound volume. Prendergast is known for outdoor leisure scenes, beaches and parks in a Post-Impressionist manner. The identities of the figures are not recorded; they are probably quick on-the-spot sketches with no attempt at individual portraiture.

Curious detailDato curioso
Prendergast carried small pocket sketchbooks like this one to draw outdoors; the Cleveland Museum of Art preserves this example still bound, so viewers can see how the artist conceived a composition flowing across two pages.

I focus on the light cream paper, slightly yellowed with time, with the spine and stitching visible at the center of the open sketchbook. I notice how the graphite in medium and dark gray sits with varying pressure, sometimes with a firm point and sometimes with the side of the lead for soft shading. I am drawn to those slightly worn edges and the fragility of the broken, zigzag line, because they reveal a quick study, untouched and uncorrected, meant to capture the moment without worrying about finish.

I see this double page as if I were looking at a sky from above, with constellations made of graphite lines. In the foreground, two seated figures with wide hats are like two close stars, and farther away, four or five small silhouettes form scattered groups along a horizontal strip that suggests the beach. The horizon with long diagonal lines reminds me of the boundary between sea and sky, and those open strokes at the top could be clouds, a swift map of human leisure under light.

It looks like someone drew very quickly at the beach with a pencil, making little lines and swirls. At the bottom there are two people sitting with big hats, as if they are resting on the sand, and further back there are other tiny little people standing, with round heads like little balls. I like that everything is done only in gray on light paper with lots of fun zigzag lines. It feels like taking a quick photo before everyone moves.
