An open double-page spread from a sketchbook, with a graphite drawing spanning both sheets across the central gutter. The paper is creamy, slightly yellowed with age and with faintly darkened edges. The line work is quick, gestural and sketchy, with overlapping strokes and irregular hatching. At center and to either side are three or four houses with pitched roofs, chimneys and small rectangular windows just suggested; their walls are minimally outlined but gain volume through diagonal shading. In front of the houses, trees with bushy crowns are built from dense, looping scribbles. In the foreground, a road winds from the lower right corner toward the center, flanked by wavy vegetation and fences hinted at with short vertical marks. Near the gutter at the bottom, two small, blurred figures appear, one with a broad hat, rendered with darker, smudged graphite. The upper band is sky, with clouds drawn as loose, undulating outlines. Light is even and diffuse, without strong shadows, typical of an outdoor sketch. Smudges, erasures and corrections throughout reveal the immediate, working nature of the study.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the curving road on the right and follow its loop toward the center where it meets the houses. Then notice the densely scribbled treetops and the two small smudged figures in the foreground, which give human scale and turn the landscape into an inhabited scene.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this spread is in graphite, the same sketchbook holds 16 watercolors; Prendergast often used such rapid sketches as groundwork for later, highly colorful compositions.

I focus on the support before the landscape. It is an open sketchbook whose creamy yellowish paper already shows edges slightly darkened by age and smudges from handling. The graphite crosses the central gutter with quick, nervous strokes, diagonal hatching and smudges that I would not hide, because they reveal the immediate gesture. I notice the corrections, the uneven hatching on the walls and the different density between trees and road. Everything points to a working sketch, not a piece made for display, and that fragility is part of its value.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this sketch as a record of daylight. There are no sharp shadows or strong contrasts, just an even light that suggests a morning outdoors in Cape Ann. In the upper band the sky is barely hinted with loose, wavy outlines for clouds, without detail. I like how economical the graphite is, because it leaves a lot of air on the page. That emptiness between the houses, the bushy-crowned trees and the winding road is also information about the luminous atmosphere of the place.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like tracing the road with my finger, it starts at the bottom corner and curves all the way to the houses like a slide. The houses have pointy roofs and chimneys and tiny windows that look like little faces. The trees are made of lots of scribbles like curly clouds. Near the center there are two small smudges that are people and one wears a big hat. You can tell the drawing was quick, as if the artist was in a hurry not to lose what he saw before the light changed.
