What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single vertical page from a bound sketchbook, photographed against an almost black background that reveals the volume’s worn edges. The paper fills nearly the whole frame and is a pale greyish blue, matte and slightly grainy, with small yellowish stains toward the right side and lower area. On the left, a narrow strip of beige paper is visible, probably an endpaper or the inside of the binding, while along the right edge the irregular, darkened edges of other leaves are stacked together. In the upper half, drawn in very faint black chalk, are two legs cut off at mid-calf. The leg on the right rests on a shod foot seen in profile, its toe pointing right; a diagonal line extends the leg beyond the study. The leg on the left steps forward or hangs down and mainly shows the rounded sole or front of its shoe. Below is a second, even fainter study that is hard to read: overlapping curves and crossed lines suggest other feet or legs in a different position. Near the top center is a handwritten “27,” and at the lower right, almost lost in the damaged corner, is “53.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top, where the two legs are easiest to read, and compare the profile shoe with the rounded form beside it. Then move down to the fainter tangle of lines and notice how the study nearly dissolves into the paper. Finally, look at the worn edges and the two numbers to remember that this is a working page, not a finished drawing.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 53 of the Verona Sketchbook, a bound volume by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787), dated 1760 and drawn in black chalk. The source gives no description of a specific scene or model, so who posed, if anyone, is not known. In the eighteenth century, artists commonly filled sketchbooks with studies of hands, feet and drapery to practice anatomy and prepare figures for larger compositions. This sheet probably served that kind of workshop purpose, although the painting it may have been connected to is not identified in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the sheet carries two numbers at once: a handwritten “27” near the top center and a “53” in the lower right corner, a reminder that sketchbooks were often numbered again as they were bound, catalogued or rearranged.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our reading change when a drawing is a rehearsal rather than a finished work?¿Cómo cambia nuestra lectura cuando un dibujo es un ensayo y no una obra terminada?
  2. Why might an artist devote an entire page to feet, a part of the body often hidden by clothing and composition?¿Por qué dedicar una página entera a los pies, una parte del cuerpo que la ropa y la composición suelen ocultar?
  3. What can the worn paper, stains and double numbering tell us about how this sketchbook was used and preserved?¿Qué nos cuentan el papel gastado, las manchas y la doble numeración sobre el uso y la conservación de este cuaderno?

If you look closely you will see how fragile this eighteenth century blue gray paper is. I worry about that matte grainy texture and the small yellowish stains on the right and lower area, traces of time and humidity. The black charcoal is so faint it seems it could vanish if we breathe too hard. My work has been to keep those worn edges and darkened page edges from crumbling, because this page 53 holds very delicate workshop traces.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am used to looking carefully and taking notes, and I see the same here. The artist did not draw a finished scene, he just practiced. In the upper half there are two legs cut at mid calf with shod feet, one in profile pointing to the right and another showing the sole. Below there is another blurry scheme, almost a nebula of lines. Like in my sky charts, he numbered the pages, here we can read 27 at the top and 53 at the bottom right.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like unfinished homework. There are two legs with shoes, but only from the knee down, and they are floating in the middle of the blue sheet. One leg is seen from the side and the other shows the bottom of the shoe. Below there is another messy blurry drawing I do not understand. The paper is stained and very old and at the edges you can see many sheets stacked together. At the top it says 27 and at the bottom 53, like an exercise book.

Look carefully at the upper half, how many clearly defined shod feet can you see drawn in faint charcoal?

    HintPista

Look at the middle of the blue page, one silhouette points to the right.

  2. #2

What color is the paper where the feet and legs are drawn?

    HintPista

It is not white or beige, think of the tone of a cloudy sky.

  3. #3

Find the handwritten numbers on the page, what small number appears at the top center?

    HintPista

The other number, 53, is almost lost in the worn bottom right corner.
