black chalk with white heightening

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire frame against a plain black background: a vertical sketchbook page seen from the front, with the bound spine on the left. The paper is pale grayish blue, matte and slightly grainy, with irregular, worn and somewhat darkened edges, especially along the top and right side; there is a small yellowish stain in the upper right corner and, near the top center, a handwritten “24” in dark ink. Running diagonally from the hand on the left to the elbow on the right is a bare left arm, cut off at mid-bicep by the drawing itself. The hand is foreshortened and partly in profile, with the thumb raised and the other fingers flexed or overlapping, only lightly defined. The outline is drawn in soft black chalk; volume is built with short, cross-hatched strokes along the underside of the forearm and with white touches that light the knuckles, wrist and muscles. The light seems to come from above. Below the arm, the paper remains almost empty except for faint, nearly erased circular white marks and a tiny brown spot. The scale feels intimate: clearly the size of a study page, not a monumental work.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the diagonal from the elbow to the fingertips and notice how little line is needed to suggest movement. Then look closely at the hand: the raised thumb and the white touches on the knuckles change a simple anatomical exercise into a gesture that seems to point or bless. Finally, step back and look at the nearly empty blue page and its worn edges.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 47 of the Verona Sketchbook, drawn in 1760 by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787), using black chalk with white heightening. In eighteenth-century artistic training, sketchbooks gathered studies of hands, arms, drapery and figures that could later be reused in paintings, so this page is probably a preparatory exercise. The work it may have been made for is not known. The blue paper provided a middle tone: black created the shadows and white produced the highlights.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the arm floats with no body, clothing or setting, yet the foreshortening of the hand makes it project toward the viewer as if it were emerging from the blue page.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What gesture do you think this hand is making, and what in the drawing supports your reading?¿Qué gesto crees que está haciendo esta mano y qué elementos del dibujo sostienen tu interpretación?
  2. How does the image change when we remember this is a study page rather than a finished artwork?¿Cómo cambia la imagen cuando recordamos que es una página de estudio y no una obra terminada?
  3. Why might an artist devote an entire page to a single arm instead of drawing the whole figure?¿Por qué un artista dedicaría una página entera a un solo brazo en lugar de dibujar la figura completa?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the pale grayish blue paper with its matte and slightly grainy surface, with irregular darkened edges and a small yellowish stain at the upper right corner, plus the handwritten 24 at the top center, the support itself speaks of use and time, the diagonal arm drawn with soft black charcoal gains volume through short crossed hatching underneath and white highlights on knuckles and wrist, those faint almost erased circular marks and the tiny brown dot intrigue me as traces of corrections in the study

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this arm as if it were an illuminated planet, light coming from above leaves white highlights on knuckles, wrist and muscles while black charcoal creates shadow with crossed strokes on the lower forearm, the smooth black background and the pale grayish blue paper work like a night sky that makes the volume stand out, the foreshortened hand with the thumb raised seems to orbit in the emptiness of the page, and the empty lower area with faint marks reminds me of erased constellations

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This arm goes slanted diagonally as if saying hello, from the elbow to the hand with the thumb sticking up, I like that it is drawn only with black and shiny white touches on the knuckles, the paper is grayish blue and feels soft even though the edges look a bit old and dark, at the top there is a handwritten 24 and a little yellow stain, below there is almost nothing except some erased white little circles and a small brown dot, it looks like homework drawing by someone who tries hard
